Roof panel
Has anyone had their rear fiberglass roof panel (sail panel) painted. I just got a quote and it was high. Alot of shops said no way because they could not guarantee the work.

Is the adhesive bleeding through the paint?

panel
Could be, there are bubbles forming under the paint. Shop said they have to use a special primer to prevent this from happening.

yep you have the infamous chicken pox. It comes from the adhesive GM used during the 99< yrs. You have only 2 ways of fixing it. Carefully removing your sail panel, remove all of the adhesive and re instal using the correct adheisive or most likely, you'll have to order a replacement panel from 6Liter Designs (they are the only place that is making repair panels, GM stopped long time ago)

No primer and paint is going to fix the chicken pox. It's the adhesive bleeding through that eats the paint.

^^ This. Don't waste any $$ trying to fix the problem... just replace it.

Mine hasn't begun to bubble badly yet, just alot of small ones that aren't obvious unless you know what to look for. I have one of the carbon fiber sail panels on back order with 6LE that I am going to replace it with once it comes in and I am ready to repaint the car. Until then I am thinking of sanding it down and rattle canning it like I did on my back bumper.

On a hot sunny day, a viscous fluid will weep through the panel and the wind will streak it across the surface. It's bad.

I agree completely. But if I can mask it for a while with some rattle can spray I will

I admit to rattle canning the fender lips behind the front tires. Having a black car makes that so easy. I should do the rear fender lips while I change out the axle seal this morning.

A proper paint job is damn near 90% prep. I assume you'll paint the entire panel rather than trying to spot it in?

I need to install my new one still. Think I have had it now for almost 4 years. Working on swapping out an axle seal today and changing the fuild in the rear while I am at it.

What do you think is the best adhesive for swapping sail panels? I was looking at 3M 08690 Fast Cure Auto Glass Urethane Cartridge - 10.5 fl. oz. : Amazon.com : Automotive

I will be using urethane on mine. Not exactly sure which brand or anything yet. Make sure you have some time to fiddle with it before the stuff sets.
