Is this right or should I be pissed?

Sorry, this is a long story!

    May 25, 2008
My car was towed into a local shop. I deliberated on what I wanted to do with the engine because I cracked a rod and needed a new engine or a rebuild.

    2 weeks pass...

    June 7-10th
I decided on a forged bottom end and a nice heads and cam package and told them to place the orders for the parts. All the while being pressured to make a decision because they needed the shop space that my car was occupying.

    4 more weeks pass...

    July 7-10th
I call the shop roughly every other day to get updates. I am always told that they are still waiting on parts.

    2 more weeks pass...

    July 24-27th
Finally, I am told all the parts are in and the engine is off to the machine shop to be assembled.

    1 week passes...

    August 2-4th
I contact the machine shop and am told they had been waiting on parts from the original shop for about a week and still had yet to begin assembly.

    1 week passes...

    August 10-14th
The machine shop has begun assembly, however, when they begin to balance the brand new crankshaft, they find a defect. It either needs to be milled or replaced. I opted for replacing as I don't want a defective crankshaft in my engine. Within, a few days I personally have to go pick up the defective crank and take it back to the original shop so he can send it back and order a new one.

    August 19th, 2008
He orders the new crank and says to expect it by Friday.

    August 27th, 2008
Still no crank, my car is still weeks away from being finished...

Is this right? I am so unbelievably frustrated with the whole situation. If he had told me off the bat that I wouldn't drive my car until September there is no way in hell I would've taken it to him. I dont want to complain because I want the work done right. What should I do???

From my experience its about normal..... I took it to a speed shop in Lincoln and it took them over a week just to get my car dynoed. I asked this same thing to a friend of mine who is really into diesel trucks, turbos, mud pulls and dyno pulls and he told me that its pretty much the norm from his experiece too.

    I'd be pissed.

It's always a good idea to get in writing an estimated time for completion. This is true for most any work, not just your car...

I guess, you just have to deal with it though. They've got ya!

But, if you don't pay as said above, it'll just mess up your credit when they send you to collections.

Sorry you're going through the frustration!

I would be mad as hell. I'd tell them I want my car and the parts back (when they get there and if you already paid for them) and take it to someone else.

Okay I see your frustation, but your number one mistake was not getting the parts yourself. havent you heard of the saying if you want the job done right do it yourself. that lazy ass shop is just taking their sweet ass time. I would tow my car back, get your old engne back. Order your parts and take it to a known repair shop or to the stealership.

+1 on buying the parts yourself then giving it to him.
However that doesn't help you... lesson learned.
1st. I'd get a quote in writing. If not, that could be your next headache when its complete.
2nd. I'd ask a shit load of questions, and express your feeling with thier performance. Your the customer and you have a right to know what your paying for.
3rd. I'd call dailey and stop by every other day untill I was taken seriously.

Always document your phone conversations, emails and letters to and from. This is ammunition for court.

Just inform them of your intentions to go to court with the case if the motor is not delivered per their estimate etc. You will probably have to pay them in full to get the motor back but, you can sue for the hassel and lost time without the vehicle. This may even light a fire under their ass to get it done.

I'm sure they made some promises that have not been kept and taking them to court after the fact with proper documentation may be your only recourse to get compensated for your frustration and lost whatever you can think of. Just keep your cool and approach the situation very adult like and keep it all business. Remove your emotion when talking to them about how displeased you are over the experience.

    Good luck in this.

BTW, the name says it all. 3-4 months for a motor rebuild is overkill. Ask them if there is an "Overkill West" that can perform any better.

man I guess i got lucky. I took my car to extrememotorsports in blounstown florida. they where doing a heads/cam/exuast/and tune. brought them all the parts and had the car back in a lil over a week. awsome shop and the owner called me or e-mailed me about every day to give updates. I am not trying to make you feel worse by rubbing it in but it seems to me that this should be the norm. I would takes my car along with all parts back. pay them whatever they say you owe. them report them to the better business bearu. That should not be the norm. its funny how when they are not working on it its a burdon and taking up space, but once the bill starts they will take all the time they want.
