    Racing Tips..

Hey guys! Just wanted to get a few tips on racing with my M6 T/A. It's completely stock right now, and I just learned how to drive it a couple weeks ago.. But I wanted to know a few tricks/tips to use when racing.

The reason for the question is I was driving today just cruising at about 40 in 4th gear, and this older guy with a mullet and 2 little girls in the car pulls up next to me.. He punches on the gas, and it jumps forward a bit, then he slows back down and gets next to me again.. He was laughing about it a little bit, and he did it again and I could tell he wanted to race..

So I take a closer look at his car, and read "Rouche 427 Supercharged"

Now I already know I don't stand a chance against his car, but I would have liked to try, just for fun and to see his car go.. Unfortunately, I didn't because I didn't have a clue what to do!!

Like I said, I just learned how to drive a manual, and I can drive it perfectly fine, but I haven't really learned anything about downshifting or anything like that.

I can launch the car pretty good, (took out some idiot in a GT a couple nights ago at a stop light ). But when it comes to racing from a roll and I'm in lets say, 4th-6th gear, I'm kind of clueless on what to do.

If anybody could give me some advice on shifting / downshifting and how I should race from a roll, that would be awesome.

    Thanks everybody

Rev-match when you downshift, you can probably find some videos of it on youtube or something. Basically you just get your RPM's to match your current speed in a lower gear before you engage the clutch.

so lets say i'm in fourth gear and i'm cruising at 35mph and i wanted to downshift to second, i would get my rpm up to whatever it would be if i was going 35mph in second gear?

alright, so from what i understand, you push in clutch, step on the gas to get your rpm's up, when it's at the right rpm then you downshift, and let out the clutch while stayin on the gas the whole time?

also, sorry for the all the questions, but how do you know what rpm you need to have it at for each gear? just get out there and see what each gear will get up to and what rpm/mph it's at?

That's correct, but once you get the hang of it all it will take is a little blip on the gas pedal and you should know when to engage. As far as knowing what your rpm's need to be in each gear, getting out and there and just taking note of what the rpm's are is the best way. Either that or using this gear calculator http://www.f-body.org/gears/ should help you out.

Whatever you feel safe/comfortable downshifting to is what I would suggest, but I guess don't drop it to a gear when you are about to max it out.

First thing you should do is if you have a stock shifter GET RID OF IT for an aftermarket shifter like a Hurst Billet, B&M Ripper or Pro 5.0.
We don't need you missing a gear and bending some pushrods or valves.

Rev matching is pretty easy just blip the throttle inbetween the down shift.
You can drop 2 gears at a time (4th to 2nd, 5th to 3rd) at cruising speeds. Never drop to 1st unless your speed is under 30mph (assuming you have the stock 3.42's). It can sometimes be done at 35mph but it's not worth it.

Launching is all about wheelspin you really don't want any but a slight amount won't hurt you. This is easier said than done though and practice is the only way to master it. Back in the day us manual trans owners would roll out from the light against each other and when the clutch was full engaged it was on. Most of my Street runs where done this way and it doesn't give advantage to either vehicle.

Anyway like I said before practice makes perfect.
Have Fun but be safe and watch out for the Po Po's

blip the throttle is when you put in the clutch and quickly step on the gas to get your rpm up so you can downshift it?

Yes you blip the throttle and let the clutch out aterwards (while the rpm is up) this puts less stress on the driveline.

alright, i think i know what to do... now i just have to practice it and know what gears to downshift to depending on how fast i'm going, and how high to get the rpm before i shift into that gear...

also if you're in 4th gear at 45 how high should you get your rpms up to before you downshift to 2nd?
