Black w/ red race stripes- 2001 Trans AM WS6
Post-headlight-motor-swap question
I changed my drivers’ side headlight motor yesterday. But while enjoying the absence of that awful grinding noise, I noticed that when I lock or unlock the doors with the keyless entry, the headlights don’t flip up and down anymore, as they used to before. Is this normal? Did I do something wrong??

That is the way it should be.
When the motor goes bad for what ever reason the lights begin to flip up and down to let you enjoy the grinding noise any time you lock your car.

Ya I had an electrical problem with my locks and my lights did that too. Soon as I had it fixed the lights stopped.

you can set different security modes in some cars to do that. but yes you get a little malfunction those damn lights keep doing that... just to publicly embarrass us!

Lol I think it's funny that you thought they were supposed to pop up and down. Mine did that for a while until I replaced the bad gears. I had just one bad light for a while, and I would always turn on the lights during the day so it wouldn't look retarded. I would even leave lights on if going into a gas station or something quick.

Every time I would lock my door I would think "wow, now this is just cruel" lol. Yeah I'm pretty sure it was the gear that went, but I would have had to do the same thing to replace just the gear anyway so figured I might as well replace the whole motor just in case.
I'm with you, I hate seeing the pop-eye on firebirds. I had a firebird before my ta and I would manually put down the drivers side every day lol

So did you mean you changed the entire motor or just replaced the nylon gear with a metal one?
Wondering...does anyone know WHY the lights flip when there's a particular problem? I guess it's just electrical and gets confused.Last edited by onetroubledguy; 03-04-2009 at 02:57 PM.

I am having the same problem with my passenger side light. It is very annoying. Its good to know all I have to do is replace the headlight motor ? Where can I find 1 at ? Are they all compatible or do I have to specify what year it is for ?

Cobra. The reason it's doing it is because of a stripped nylon gear. The temp fix is to get into the motor and turn the gear 180 degrees, so it uses the side that was never used.
You can also replace the ENTIRE motor, but risk the chance of the gear stripping again depending how much it was used. Or just replace the cheap nylon gears with metal ones. I would recommend metal if you plan on keeping the car for a while.
This is the kit that I got:

Thanks for the info. I manually closed it and it worked for a few days. Then started doing it again it was crazy I thought she had a mind of her own lol. Read a few posts on it but this is the best info I have found. I will try the 180 degree fix jus to tinker around with it. ( Thats about all I can do with it here in good ole Michigan) Until the weather breaks all I can really do is sit in the garage and Rev her up every once in awhile. lol
Where can I find some good quality gears at ? Here in the classifieds or do u recommend another site or store ?
