Noise that I can't quite narrow down.

2002 WS6 TA. Bought it in November so still kind of a n00b learning these beasts.
    All factory car.
I'm getting a fairly loud whine that sounds like it's coming from the rear end.

It only happens when you're in gear and let your foot of the accelerator. as the engine rpms wind down as it slowly loses speed, there's a whooooooooo oooooooo ooooooo.

This does NOT happen when you're accelerating or coasting as high speed in neutral.

I would think if it was a the rear end it would make noise all the time.
It's slowly gotten louder since I bought it and i've put around 5K miles on it since then.

Thanks to any advice you guys can offer!

How many miles on the car? Mine is doing exactly the same thing & she only has 30000 miles on her. I kinda figured the backlash on the ring & pinion is off & needs reshimmed. I've yet to dig into it...plus I'm not so sure the gears weren't changed out & the shimming was done incorrect. I did change the fluid & additive when I first bought her & that had NO effect at all. Plus the rear is weeping as usual around the pinion seal....10 bolt thing.

Just turned 55K miles. I bought a new gasket today and some carb cleaner. I'll change out the oil and clean it out and add in royal purple oil and postrac additive and see it that helps at all.

A guy I work with used to mod the crap out of his and he told me I need a $2500 moser 12 bolt rear end. NOT ready for that, but he said it's just starting to go and to drive it until it does - then replace witha heavy duty rear end. I plan on driving this car for the forseeable future.......
