Thanks. I can't take credit for knowing it all on my own. I learned a lot from my mechanic who did short circle track racing (1/4 to 3/8 mile paved), and years of reading beyond that.

I don't know if it applies to motorcycles exactly the same, but I'd suspect so. Unless you have some really fat tires on there, the span will be much narrower, so it would be harder to get the difference in temperature.

I did some quick looking while replying, and found these two links which may help you there. I just searched Google for "motorcycle tire temperature pressure pyrometer" I got car results mixed in with that, but with 600,000 pages, you're likely to find some good information.

    http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=29693

    http://www.sportrider.com/tech/tires...ure/index.html

They're saying the tire manufacturers will list optimal tire temperatures for traction, so you'll have to find the chart for your tires, and then use the pyrometer to adjust your pressures until you're in the right range.

The first link suggests a way to use the difference in temperature (between cold and hot) to determine if you're reaching the right range.

The pyrometer is still probably the best way to do it (IMHO).

P.S. sorry for the thread jack.

No problem. In my opinion, it applies. It would have been easier if you had asked about a passenger car or SUV, but still, it's about tire pressures and that's what he wanted to know about.

I haven't ridden motorcycles in years, other than a few test drives ("hey, take my bike out and see if it works right.")

is it the same procedure checking a bike tire as a car tire?
+1 havin the wrong pressures on a bike tire can seriously ruin ur day.
spoken from experience. well, from watchin my friend gain the experience as he laid down a triumph tt600 that the tires were so overinflated the tire was bubbled and deformed.

Quite understandable. But I also fear the idiots on bikes. Here in Atlanta, I see many large groups of guys on sports bikes flying down the highway weaving in and out of traffic. They'll fly up on me in my lane and swerve around me at the last second. Pisses me off because heaven forbid I flinch or swerve a little within my own lane and it makes one of them overreact and crash, knowing today's society they'll get to sue me (assuming they live). I have much more respect for the guys the ride Harleys and other such cruisers. I almost never see them driving dumb like that.

The tires only tell you the max pressure. That's why we've been having this discussion...

Yeah I know what the discussion is about.. I run super soft auto-x shaveable tires for the hell of it and I also run the low max air psi.. Too low and the wheel would spin inside the tire and could cause the tire to pop off the bead.. The tires I run have to be "caulked" when mounted.. I would recommend running the "cold" max. But that's just me.. I did'nt know there was a sticker that denoted the psi range available on the car.. Learn something new everyday..
