If I were a transmission got that crappy AOD in my 5.0 vert wouldn't be clunking around it would be a T5 or I would have fixed it but I have gotten used to driving in D till after 40 the putting in in OD then back to D when the speed drops below 40. POS Mustang Tranny. The
4L60 is junk compards to those sweet paddle shifting 6 spd autos in the Vettes but still worlds better than the AOD's ford used. Heard there new auto's for the 5.0's are decent.1998 Trans Am 85k miles.

American cars clung to the 4spd auto for way too long I would have been happy if at least the TA's had 5spd auto's.

If you can swing it, Check into buying a built tranny online. You can have them send it to the shop for you too. I am not sure who is a sponsor on here for transmissions but feel free to PM me and I will tell you where I bought mine. If not, definitely find someone who knows what they are doing and you trust to work on it. Good luck
