Exclamation Metallic Clicking Noise when Changing Gears

    Hi Guys,

I have an Automatic 2000 WS6 TA. It is about 7 years old now and has about 33K miles. For the last year or so, when I shift from Park to Reverse or Drive (or vice-versa) or when I shift from Drive to 1st, I get metal sounding clicking noises as the gears shift. Some days are worse than others. It also happens sometimes when I am sitting at a red light in the Drive gear and ease on the accelerator. The dealership looked at it and said that all seems normal and they cannot find anything to repair. But if it is normal, why didn't this noise happen since the day I bought the car? Has anyone experienced this? Thanks for your help.

I have an 02 WS6 with 21000 miles and it does the same thing. I've heard alot of people talk about it, I think it's pretty common. Nothing wrong, just a little annoying. I haven't been able to tell exactly where it's coming from.

Thanks for the reply Jimbo. Has your 02 WS6 been making that noise since the day you bought it or is the noise more recent?

It's done it as long as I've had it, but I bought it from a previous owner and didn't notice it for a week or two. The best info I've found was from a post on LS1Tech.com.

"It's just a little slack in the drivetrain. Mine does it, the U-joints are fine, its the aluminum driveshaft that makes that metallic clink sound when putting it into gear. Although bad u-joints would make it worse.

I heard of one guy drilling the shaft and filling it w/ foam to fix it. Or another route would be to get a lingenfelter driveshaft, supposedly that fixes it as well."

The clicking I hear definately sounds like aluminum, so it would make sense.
