Catalytic converters are designed to reduce the combustion emissions of your car: Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen Gas, Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide, and Nitrogen Oxides.

Without them, your exhaust is emitting all of this into the atmosphere so it's likely you're going to smell something.

I don't have catalytic converters and I can smell my car running from outside of it.

A tune is not a necessity with a header install and cat delete.

I was actually going to ask this same question Jeff, but I forgot to. That's a valid question and a good point.

I know I have always ran a little rich myself, both before and after my FI install. I was tuned before and re-tuned again after of course. I remember smelling a distinct odor before. It doesn't seem as apparent now though. Maybe I've gotten use to it though.

Just as reference for the OP, at cruising speeds out of boost, my wideband reads anywhere from 14.3 to 15.X. When I'm in boost, I'm right at 11.7ish

Going off memory mostly. It's been about 4 months since I've been in the car, haha.

It's gonna always stink to some degree without the cats tune or no tune! You give up maybe 5 to 8 hp pending horsepower levels and mods with the cats on. For a track duty car I can understand removing the cats but for a daily driver it ain't worth acrid odor that makes your eyes water with the t-tops off. lol

I agree. Years back I ran highly modified short blocks mostly in Camaros. They, naturally, were all carburetor fueled and always pumping more fuel in than the engine could efficiently burn. Man, the raw gas and exhaust smells were killers. A guaranteed head ache and you just about had to burn your clothes to get rid of the smell. The instant you started them up you had to get the hell out of the garage or the smell would penetrate into the house. Of course I was a self appointed expert on how to wash your cylinders down and score the bores. I didn't know the meaning of too rich. Anyway, I would also recommend getting some cats and a tune to match them. For a few horses lost you'll probably live a little longer as so will your passengers.
