are you going to port them or just install them as is?

as is would be a waste of $400 imo, especially if you are going to pay to have them installed as opposed to doing it yourself, which still, doing it yourself is hard and wouldn't be worth the effort for me.

porting a set of heads is risky (because heads, LSX heads especially, are hard to port) and thusly expensive.. for a little more you can buy new tried and tested cnc'd 5.3/ls6 heads that will work much better, it is also easy to find some used one's for much less (a friend of mine just bought a set of lingenfelter heads for $300)

    again, all IMO

let me throw my $.02 in, ls6 heads will give you a little more power, in fact the ls6 heads flow around 10cfm more than ls1 heads(ls1 ~290cfm ls6 ~300cfm I'm using intake flow@ .650") which will lean your A/F which is good. With a good set up/ rockers springs ext. and a nice tune ls6 heads can give you about 15-20rwhp. But if you are going to spend money on heads might as well do it right and go with some real good heads 5.3 stage 2.5(~312cfm) can give you with a good tune ~40rwhp. Now PRC 237cc CNC Ported LS Cylinder Heads have a flow of around 340 cfm and can give you 60+rwhp. these are just the 2 heads i know well, there are a lot of choices out there and you just go to know what you want your car to be to know what setup to go with.

I doubt he'd see 15-20hp from the heads alone with the stock cam. Waste of money.

considering an ls6 only has 50 horses on an LS1, and the only other thing that would affect power is the different cam, thats probably about right...

Factory ratings? We all know the LS1 was underated. Lets say the cam gives you 30hp and the heads 20hp, or vice versa. Without the cam you won't get those gains from the heads. Does this guy have long tubes?

Most of that 16 hp probably came from the tuning.

thats basically what makes the ls6 have 50 horses on the ls1, your call, but for me I'd go big or go home.

not sure I totally understood the question, stock 5.3 heads area bit smaller than ls1 heads, but they will give you more compression and torque, with a decent cam 5.3 heads are a great bang for the buck imo

Guys, one very important fact you are all leaving out is the comression ratio bump from 10:1 to 10.5:1 which bumps power a good bit! The flow is better as well, but I believe the bump iun cylinder pressure makes the power difference. Maybe 10hp from the cam differences between LS1 and LS6.

That is correct, there is a 1/2 point compression bump with LS6 heads that hasn't been mentioned.
The intake runners are 210cc verses the LS1 at 200cc. The exhaust runners are also 5cc larger if memory serves, and they also have a flat floor that gives them that "D" shape port, which helps exhaust flow by widening the short turn radius right behind the valve.

Out of the box they are a pretty darn good head untouched. For $400 and only 10,000 miles I'd buy em'. I bought my set a few years back for $300 off a 30,000 mile Z06.
Take them to a shop, have them checked for cracks, valve guide wear, flatness, etc....if all is good, lap the valves and go with it.

On the other hand if you have more money to spend and it's burning a hole in your pocket, I'd spend the $1,500 or so for a set of cnc ported LS6's from Texas Speed, or if you are feeling generous I'd personally go for a set of AFR's, TF's, or TEA's
