    Dimmer switch '02

Anyone ever change the headlight dimmer switch on the steering column while its in the car. The manual talks about replacing it when the steering column is out of the car.

I wired mine to a lighted toggle next to the headlight switch. I tried to put in a foot switch, but the car almost started on fire, so, no foot switch.

Not sure why you would have to pull the column. What page of the manual are you referring to?

    manual

Depending on the year, its around 2-77 to 2-80 in the manual. This is the dimmer HI LOW switch on the side of the steering column. GM calls it a dimmer, I think you are thinking of the instrument light dimmer.

I was with you on what you were talking about, just easier to ask what page as I also have the books for the '02. Sometimes things can be a little difficult to locate in those books.

The switch is just bolted or sitting in a cup that is bolted to the driver's underside of the column. If you pull the plastic kick panel that sits over the clutch pedal, and look up, you will see it. It's white IIRC. It is actuated by a long rod that levers on your blinker lever.

    wires

Turned out to be corroded wires near the front of the car. On one side of the car someone cut and spliced some wires going to the headlights. I thought that was strange, know I know why. Connector was good and full of grease, the wires were so bad under the insulation I could not even get solder to stick to it. Seems like every item low in that area goes bad due to water intrusion. ie the horns failed, air pump failed and headlight wires failed. Wonder if corvette owners have the same problems.
