Depends on what you want out of it. I have a pretty aggressive (For a dd) custom cam, but the car is very driveable due to a great tuner (Jeremy Formato.) I went with a Comp 230/232 585/585?(Not sure about the last #) 112 LSA custom grind and some milled 243 heads and it has decent lope but will still idle and not surge or cut off. I made 416RWHP and 385 RWTQ before the UD pulley. You can get a big ass cam if you want to and still drive the car every day, just depends on if you want decent gas mileage and not to have idling issues. A little more info on exactly what you want and I am sure someone will chime in with some suggestions. I love my Cam package, I drive my car every day back and forth to work with no issues.

I have LS6 intake, Hooker S/C LT's Texas speed nocat y pipe, 243 heads, Ported stock TB, Magnaflow exhaust, Dyno tune, 160 T stat, 373 gears And an slp UD pulley.

Suspension mods are Welded SFC's, LCA Relocation brackets, UMI Panhard bar and torque arm, UMI sway bars. The car is lowered on Hotchkis springs and bilstein shocks. It flat out hooks up even with street tires.

for everything with the cam package (Springs, ETC) I paid around 1000$. I picked up the heads off craigslist for 400$. All in all I spent 3K on the H/C Package.

I'm saving for the rear end right now, and the last thing I am gonna do is get a built tranny cause the one in there works fine minus the master and slave which I gotta replace. I'm deploying overseas in October, when I get back I am gonna finish the car and get a blower.

I would get at least a 3600 stall, I had a Yank 3600 stall in my 98 Auto cammed car and it was almost as much fun as driving the stick. Just punch it and go. You start putting all that power into an auto though, you are gonna go through some trannies. Get a built one ASAP when you install the Cam. Hell, you could get a stall now and it will improve your ET's.

I wouldn't do more than a 228 580s lift type cam for a DD. Probably look for a 114 LSA as well.

I hear you. I was right there with you not too long ago. If I had stuck with one car, I would probably have a lot more $$ to mod it, but I went manual, auto, manual cause I got tired of the auto. I'm keeping this one. This is my 4th LS1 car. I had an 06 GTO in there too, sold it to get the down payment on our house. Yeah, definitely save up for a Transmission. The 4l60e is a peice of crap stock. Put a built one in with a warranty and dont look back. The stock rear end will hold up for a while if you take care of it and keep fluid in it. I put a girdle on mine when I changed out the gears to help strengthen it a little bit.

Feel free to PM me, I have been through almost everything that can possibly go wrong with these cars.

114 LSA would have been wiser for me, but I wanted to be able to hear it lope. I can deal with the rough idle though. Some people may get tired of it so i definitely see where you are coming from.
