Cheapest and reliable way to increase power.

I own a 2002 Trans Am with the stock ls1. What can I do to increase power. The car is pushing the miles so should I get it rebuilt and bored out or could I try to swap it out with a zo6 from a junk yard?

I'd rather rebuild it with a bigger cam and do some head work and get it tuned. If you buy a used ls6 it'll already have miles on it and cost the same if not more than rebuilding yours

Lots of guys on here are well north of 100,000 miles and are still running their cars at the track. Really depends on what kind of shape your engine is in. If well maintained, no reason you cannot mod what you have. Always good to start with a lid, catback, headers and a mail order tune from Frost.

Cheapest way is spray. 100-150 shot lol.

Best way IMO is headers, exhaust, lid, cam, valve train, tune.

Thats about 2-3k in mods and you could get anywhere from 380-420whp over 300-320whp stock.

I can start off easy like a air intake or the exaust. My exuast is one muffler away from being true dual. Would it save monet to get Borla mufflers for example and have the rest magnaflow or some other cheap brand? How much HP should I put cuase the rear ends are WEAK in these cars.

Stock cars have been known to destroy the rear ends in our cars. It's really just a matter of time. Then again, there are cars with much more hp that haven't fragged a stock rear end. Really depends on your foot if you keep out of it on the launch and have tires that don't get good traction - it will help. Unfortunately, a better rear end is a necessity when starting to play.

I have full exhaust, volant, LS6 intake, P&P throttle body, underdrive pulleys and my friend owns a vette shop and we tossed the over rich dyno tune that gave it like 339rwhp. I know it has more now because once we cut back on the fuel and bumped the timing a few degrees it drove much better then he tuned the tranny to shift a little faster, hrder, and hold every gear to 6k ay WOT and with my Motive 3.73's I haven't broke them yet. The stock 3.23's went at 70k. I also have 18x10's with bfg kdw NT's which grab good for a non drag radial and I have UMI adj. lca's and panhard bar, spohn sway bar set, bmr srpings, and kyb agx's and couldn't be happier. It launches hard from a dig or a 50 roll. No problem taking out a 2010 SS 6ssspd from 60 to 130 pulling the whole way. Still not enought I wantt a 3400 stall and Texas Speed Torquer cam in Sept.
Then it mat be time to swap in a 9" or 12 bolt whatever deal comes across 1st. My friend has a 00 Z28 with h/c, bolt on's and a stall and a built tranny. Aparenty his gf's farther is a tech so I'm going to have him do mine since the other shop I was going to use seems to have alot of them come back for broken parts because of stupid or lazy mistakes. I don't care if it has a warranty if it is there once a month being fixed I wanna drive. Stocks can take abuse only a few of my friends have new rears some just have new grear and a rebuild kit and they last. Mine is going 15k since the rebuild and gears. My car only comes out for cruises and racing so its beaten more often than not.

    2002 Z28 A4 NBM
    Sadly now demodded :(

I had 3.73's behind my A4 before the pinion welded itself to the bearing. Currently sporting 3.23's.

3.73's @ 70-75mph was right about 2900-3000 rpm in OD with the TC locked up. 3.23's is right at 2500rpm @ 74-75mph.

Depending on how far you're going it's not much of a difference.

    My 98 with stock 3.42's and M6 is 1800rpm @ 80mph in 6th. I put this here so you can compare Curtis's 4.11 speed.
    67 Camaro: K-K + 797-z (look it up), 454/Th400/4.10 12-bolt = 6mpg, PS/PDB/PW tilt, tach, gauges...

2005 Corvette LS2/M6 Magnetic Red Metallic (What else would it be?) w/ Cashmere interior

    2002 Z28: NBM/Tan, MTI smooth lid, smooth bellows, !AIR, !cats, 1-3/4" QTP SS LT's, 2-1/2" TD's with X-pipe, MagnaFlows dumped at axle, custom welded SFC's, MidWest Chassis body mount adjustable T/A, 3400 stall, 3.23 gears (was 2.73). Tuned: 343rwhp/357rwt (before TD's). Best: 12.559 @ 108+, 1.73 60' @ 3500' DA w/MT ET Street DR's.

    Carbon footprint? CLOWN SHOE!
