Camshaft versus Crankshaft dot location to reflect TDC
I have disassembled and reassembled my timing 3 times.
I have lined up my dots for the Camshaft at 6 o'clock and my Crankshaft at 12 o'clock. My Dowel pin for my Camchaft is at 3 o'clock. With what I believe is TDC on my first piston.
I have read a book called How to Rebuild Small-Block Chevy LT-1/LT-4 Engines. Page 149 under "prepare the engine for Distributor" it indicates that both dots are to be at 12 o'clock with the camshaft dowel being at 9 o'clock .
In the Haynes Repair manual, Chapter 2, Section 10 under installation, step 15 indicates " Loop the new chain over the camshaft sprocket, then turn the sprocket until the timing mark is in the 6 o'clock position. Illustration shows dots at 6 and 12, Cam at 6 and Crank at 12.
Which is right? I have a 97 TA/ WS6 LT1 5.7L. This is my last attempt to fix otherwise a .45 cal is in call, straight to block. Engine Block that is.

I prefer a stick of dynamite.
Cam to crank timing is correct with the Cam @ 6 and Crank @ 12.
Then rotate crankshaft until engine is at number 1 cylinder top dead center (TDC) (camshaft sprocket pin at the 9 o'clock position) to install the distributor
