backfireing
started my car up today and its running realy rough. it jerks a little bit and started back firing. even at just an idle the car shakes more than normal. the car is in need of a new thermostat but it has been running fine for the past week or so. also the idle has been running about 500rpm more than normal. any ideas on what it could be?

Any codes? Misfire or anything like that?

sounds like a vacuum leak to me or some form of un-metered air getting into the engine. Done any work on it lately or anything near/around the MAF/intake tubing? Main reason I'm thinking vacuum leak is the high idle......that's a sign. Also, check the elbow on the pcv line going into the intake....they like to crack on the back of that bend.

i cleaned the MAF today but it is still doing the same thing. the only codes its throwing is thermostat (i think its getting stuck open sometimes because it runs cooler than normal) 02 sensor, and idle control system running at higher rpm than expected. ill check that elbow on the pvc line tomorrow morning.

check the throttle body and make sure its not sticking and clean it,also the stop screw on the throttle body, check everything from the air lid to the throttle body all hoses, lines, elec connections, etc.,if you dont find anything you may have to take it to a shop, what part of ga. you live in?

what t-stat code are you throwing? How is your idle when you first start the car? Is it rough immediately after starting the car or does it idle perfect then go south a few minutes later?

t-stat code? not shure what that is im 18 i know some about mechanics but not a wholelot. at start up the rpms immediatly jump to about 2500 then slowly idles back down to about 1000. when driving it stays up about 500 rpm than normal, i checked the hoses from the intake and couldnt find any holes in them, i just bought a thermostat today. maybe that will help out a little. the car smells like its running rich

try unhooking your battery and leave it unhooked for a few minutes and hook it back up,how do you know what codes its throwing? you have a programmer?

what about your vents in the car? They switch from floor vent to the defrost fine and all that? Reason I ask is there's a small vacuum line that controls the vents....making sure the leak isn't there. Everything you're describing sounds like a vacuum leak or air getting in after the MAF somewhere.

yeah i have a programer, ill try that. it switches fine from the floor and defrost i used it this morning. my ac system works good.

if your programmer is saying somethings wrong with the o2 sensor and idle control system, then one of your o2 sensors could be bad,i had one go bad one time and my car just skipped alot,if its the idle control system check the idle air control valve on the throttle body, its the top sensor that protrudes.

I over-oiled my K&N airfilter and my car was doing the same thing. Had to clean the MAF and the sensors from my airbox to the throttle body.

i have a hypertech computerprogramer also, do you think this could be throwing off the timing?

i had a feeling that thing was throwing stuff off! the car is running very rich! it seems as if half my gas is rolling out the exhaust. its not cheap running premium either :/
