This is not always the case check your HP and TQ curves on a dyno to determine when the "best" time to shift is. Taking the motor to high if its not built or tuned to do so is a waste valves just "float" and power and time is lost.

run it up to the red line in every gear.

thats what it was built for.

rev limiters were put there for a reason, TO USE!

Actually the first gear thing i disagree with, me and alot of friends i have run better quarter mile times when we rev 1st gear out to only 5500-5700, we tested it many times and the results are pretty much always the same, .1-.2faster on all 4 of our ls1 cars. Atleast 20-30runs altogether testing this. In all the other gears i run this bitch out, and yes the only way to damage shit is to miss shift and just let the clutch out. It sucks.

Once again The car needs to be put on a dyno to truely answer the question of shifting...........however taking it to high is a waste of time 55-5700 on a stocker imo is high enough anything else is just way out of your HP and TQ curves.

I've had Mine on the Dyno and it peaks between 53-5400 rpm, and I usually shift at 57-5800 rpm.
Being a Veteran Street Racer I never watch the tach anymore unless I'm at the Track wearing a Helmet cause I can't hear shit with it on and the Windows up.

In summer i take mine to redline every weekend lol. After a valve trtain upgrade and cam these cars live all day reving out to 6400 up to 7,000 on some cam setups. Really its just the valve springs and pushrods that get fucked up after 6200rpms.

Actually the are only rated to 6200 so after 6200 you can bend then pretty easy, hell i have seen them bend on 6000rpm relines, it happens if you miss shift alot then race they can bend.

I take my car to 6700 regularly. Of course I'm built a little to handle it.

The only "rules" for shifting are:

    a) when racing, you want to wind it out to redline every shift. Keep in mind that the tach lags the actual RPMs a tad, especially in 1st gear, so you want to grab the next gear just when the tach gets to 6000 to avoid hitting the rev limiter.

    b) in traffic, you only have to shift JUST BEFORE you hit the back of the car in front of you.

    c) if you have to ask when to shift a manual trans, you probably should've considered an automatic.

i concur fully with all of these intelligent well thought out statements
