5 generations of the Firebird?!
So, I was looking at Pontiacs website today, and noticed a link titled Firebird history. I clicked it, and a page showing 5 Trans Am's popped up with the heading: 5 Trans Am generations.
Umm, aren't there only 4 generations of Firebirds? And if there is a 5th gen, where is it?!

Sunset Orange Metallic- 2002 Trans Am WS6 M6
Five Generations
Trans Am has occupied a special place in the American Psyche for more than four decades. These special editions provided both fun and often a forward look at design direction. Gathered here are the inaugural '69, the 10th Anniversary '79, the special '89 Indy Pace Car Edition, the '99 Daytona Pace Car and the final 2002 Collector's Edition. The Trans Am casts a long shadow.

I'd love to have one of those collecter's edition. Pretty sure it has to be a typo.

That's been posted before, I'm sure it's just an error, like above said, maybe they're counting the anniversary as one.

Didnt they consider it a different generation when they had the LT1 under the hood?

I emailed the guy who published the page about a year ago when I saw it,and he replied as follows:
The 5 Generations are-
1969 Trans Am- 1st Gen
1979 10th Anniversary Trans Am- 2nd Gen
1989 20th Anniversary Trans Am- 3rd Gen
1999 30th Anniversary Trans Am- 4th Gen
2002 35th Anniversary FIREBIRD- 5th Gen
stupid as hell.... but whatever.
how the hell could such a moron be in charge of such a page?

Pewter- 2002 Trans Am WS6 M6
he also could have meant it as a different generation for each decade (5 generations or 5 decades) even though the last two are both 4th gens

black- 1999 Transam Ram Air WS6
should be called 5th gen
Maybe it should have been called a 5th gen because it had a new engine and new front end, where as when your talking about a 4th gen what are we talking about, lt1 or ls1 or93-97 or 98-02, where as if it was called a 5th gen then at least we would all know we are talking about a 98-02 ls1 and a 4th gen would be a 93-97 lt1, and lets face it, being called a 5th gen would make sense as it does have a brand new engine and front end.

All Black- 83, 87, 02 All WS6 T/As
I disagree... GM changed things alsmot every year... 3rd gens started off with the 305 crosspuke, moved to the TBI, and ended up with the 350 TPI.. and the front ends look nothing alike along the way.. .a generation is a COMPLETE redesign of the car.. not just a few tweaks...
