    Question 175,000 miles on 1998 ta...too much??

I am looking fo purchase a 1998 Trans Am LS1 car. The body and everything is in excellent shape, but it has 175,000 miles. The seller claims that the previous owner said they were all highway miles and that the car has no running issues, starts everytime, shifts smooth (auto). I am wondering how worried I should be about buying something like this. I have heard the LS1 engines oil pumps go bad a lot of the time around 100,000...is the car worth buying?? Thanks.

Depends on price. That is a lot of miles. If it is going to be a daily driver I would not do it. A weekend car possibly. I would take it to a mechanic first with that kind of mileage. I would anticipate some $ going out after the purchase for stuff. So add that into the purchase price and see if that is a good deal or a little higher priced one with lower miles.

sounds like a great ....parts car, lol. if he is asking around 4K for it, i don't think it would be too bad. but start looking for a new engine to drop in there

I would make it a DD and find a low mile car for the weekends.

Why to many miles? I would definately not want to take a cherry low mile car as a DD. With that many miles if something happens then its not that bad since it has a shit ton of miles. Ive gotten up to 25mpg driving my car and I bought it with 138k. All depends how much preventative maitenance was done

Be more concerned with the tranny going before the motor. But both are at that point where either could go very soon. Unless your stealing the car, say.....$3,000??? i wouldnt do it otherwise

    My life is a
    Ben Stiller movie.

depends on your current situation. if it took a shit in 6 months, would you be able to fix it? do you plan on driving it till it's dead then putting some monster stuff in there? I'd be more worried about the suspension @ 175k if the drivetrain is running well. I suggest testing a low-mile car too, just to feel the difference.

I think the point here is your DD has to be very dependable, otherwise your cherry low mile garage queen would be pressed into DD service if your regular DD keeps taking a dump from too many miles.

One way to make a high mileage DD last longer is to be very easy on it. But, that defeats the purpose of getting an f-body.

I paid 8,700 for my 98 TA. It had 46k miles on it. What a steal.

That many miles i will ask about 3k for it and don't use it as a daily driver. If you do then you will have to be ready for what ever comes. If you get it keep the maintenance up to speed with it. Good Luck.
