Blazen Orange Metallic- 2006 GTO
Z28's Origin
Can anyone tell me what the "Z" and the "28" stands for in Z28?

Unfortunately its not some mystic glorious explanation it was just the code for the option package. Much like WU8 etc on the new ones. Z28 was just the code for that particular package intended for Trans Am racing. Sounded good so they just named the package Z28.

It originated in 1967 and was the RPO for the 302 cu.in. 290 HP V8. Was only available with a 4spd and mandatory 3.73 or lower optional gears. Also included the special Cooling and Handling packages.

Light Pewter Metallic- 2001 Camaro SS
I think we are all forgetting about a small piece of history!
The Z in Z28, though it may be the rpo code or whatever, refers to a man named Zora Arkus Duntov A.K.A. "The Father of the Corvette"...
Similar to the "Z"R1 Corvette...
Duntov, in his first few years, wrote a memo to his bosses titled "Thought Pertaining to Youth, Hot Rodders and Chevrolet"... Then introduced the small block V-8 to the Corvette, which was later used in the Camaro as well...
We can all thank him for the Stang Eating, Ass Kicking, SStreet Kings that we drive now...
Cheers...-Nick

Sorry but you are absolutly incorrect about the "Z" being for Zora. It was merely the next RPO code as has been previously stated. Please have your facts straight next time.
You are right about the memo though. We do have him to thank for the SBC being developed into the best V8 engine ever.

Agreed that he has more meaning with the Corvettes... Simply Put, the first and all Z's were based from him...

I always thought the "28" in Z/28 mean "Dual Exhaust & 8 cylinders" kinda like an Olds 442 (400 block, 4 barrel, & dual exhaust).... Learn something new everyday.

The original Z06 option on the 2nd gen Corvette was just an option code also. IIRC, it included a 36 gallon tank (they cars were called "tankers") for road racing. This is one of many articles on the net: http://www.automedia.com/2001_Chevro...ts20010501cz/1
Please do some research 1st.

The RPO (Regular Production Option) code "Z28" was merely the next option number in sequence. Other "Z" codes are:
Z21: Style Trim Group
Z22: Rally Sport Package
Z23: Special Interior Group
Quite a few of the RPO codes are the same now as they were 40 years ago, such as C60 for Air Conditioning and G80 for Positraction.
In the case of Olds the 442 designation meant different things at different times. Originally it stood for "4" speed, "4" barrel and dual "2" exhausts. When a heavy duty 3 speed auto tranny came out in 1967 (the Th400) and it was offered in the 442 it stood for "4 barrel "4"00 cid engine and dual "2" exhaust.

Its good to know all that. But when I met with the "F-Bod Father" while down in Bowling Green for a National F Body meeting, I believe he was the one who mentions Zora Arkus Duntov...
Until you can come up with Another meaning for that Letter Z besides "its the next in line" I will stick with what he told me...

This is the best I can come up with from the most knowledgable source. If I find more I'll post it. http://www.camaros.org/pdf/options-rpo23feb00.pdf
