Speaking or rarity, how many SS's were made in hugger orange?

My Z28 was in 1999 (the only year it was offered, I think). So I have a Z28 with an SS hood, hugger orange with white stripes. I've yet to see another one.

I'm sure a collector wouldn't be impressed, but I bought the car for the enjoyment of everyday driving. I've never cared to just own a car that sits in a garage all the time. Maybe that's why the SS "rarity" isn't that big a deal to me.

Thats KIND of what I was thinking also. I will be buying this camaro for a daily driver, so I will be satisfied with a Z....but if I get lucky and stumble upon a good deal with an SS I will be just as satisfied. BTW, I really do like your car, from what I can see in the picture that shit looks hot. I wouldnt mind a black Z with an SS hood and those halo headlights and blackouts....that would be bad ass to me.

Thanks for the kind words. I've attached a couple of pics I took when I was considering it as a purchase about a year ago. Headlights were awful and soon replaced. It still has some clear coat issues, but overall, it was a great find for $6500. I've put about another $1000 in it and I'm very pleased with performance and the gas mileage (29.3 MPG on the highway going to the mountains). Pulled Black Mountain NC on I-40 in sixth gear at 55mph (about 1400rpm) and never has to downshift.

I would NOT hesitate to buy an SS either. I love 'em, and from a completely stock standpoint, it would be my preference. But the "performance" disparity is really so slight the price difference has to be for looks, NOT performance. I guess I'm just in dispute with some others about that. Like I said, a few mods and you are actually better than a stock SS. A lid, ported TB, Cat-back, headers, SFC's, Torque arm, and good shocks, and you are BETTER than a stock SS of the same year in a performance standpoint for LESS money. But the SS still has a better look....stock.

In 1989 I bought a Mustang LX 5.0 (notchback) instead of a GT (hatchback). Lots of people said it was not as strong as the GT. What bullocks! In reality, it was FASTER since it weighed less. Downforce was less, so there was a trade-off, but for about 15-20% LESS in price, I was willing to accept that. Turns out it was the better of the two in a lot of ways.

I just see this Z28/SS thing as GM's version, although not quite as bad.

I see nothing wrong with you car at all,, i would be happy as hell to have something like that. I think I might just get a Z, they are easier to find and I could spend more time driving than trying to find an SS. And for the extra money I would have spent on an SS I could just dump into the Z....so it all equals the way I see it.

After reading all of these posts I reallly see no MAJOR difference in performance. Headers, new intake, walla, you have alot of gained horsepower. Yeah that car is bad ass, ide take it lol.

NO MAJOR difference is probably the right mindset to have. Either car is a winner in my book.

One thing about "stiffer/stronger suspension" that several have remarked as an SS attribute. It's not ALWAYS better to have stiffer springs, etc. If so, racing programs would make the strongest possible springs they could and be done with it. To get the best handling, it has to be tailored to the environment where it will be, and to the driver's ability. A whole book could be written here on tuning a suspension and not scratch the surface. I think that NASCAR is a great way to explain it quickly though. Those guys are PROS and they set up cars for specific tracks, certain temps/conditions, and they RARELY get it right the first time. How many adjustments do they make DURING a race?

My point is with any car, if you are truly trying to increase performance you will be changing a LOT of OEM stuff. If you're happy with a stock SS...great, decision made and a very good choice. But if you want all-out potential and buy an SS, you just wasted a good deal of money on OEM performance "enhancements". If the "SS" badging is what you want, then spend the money and be happy. It's not wrong, and only an SS will be an SS.

My "dream" for my '99 is to install an LS7 one day with a good exhaust system and a better rear-end. 505 naturally-aspired horsepower in a 3400 pound car getting 26 highway mpg. But right now, I'm putting down about 350rwhp on an engine with 76,000 miles and very happy. I ain't gonna replace it 'til it starts to get tired.

If it was an SS, the dream would still be the same.

P.S. I LOVE the Pontiacs too. From a purely superficial standpoint, I think the WS6 is the baddest looking of all.

"You’re beside me on the seat
Got your hand between my knees
And you control how fast we go by just how hard you wanna squeeze
It’s hard to steer when you’re breathing in my ear
But I got both hands on the wheel while you got both hands on my gears
By now, no doubt that we were heading south
I guess nobody ever taught her not to speak with a full mouth
‘Cause this was it, like flicking on a switch
It felt so good I almost drove into the ditch"
