The one under the steering wheel?

If so mine is a PITA too. I usually have to hit it 2 or 3 times before it opens trunk.

just add a heavier spring to the latch and that fixes it

Yepp go to your local hardware store and pick up a spring,
    Size: 5/8" x 2- 1/2" x .072
Pull back the back panel where the trunk release motor is and you will see where the current spring is, Just add another spring to it and your problem will be fixed.
I allways remove the old spring and add two new springs to be sure it will pop on the first try.

Made a world of difference with our hatch. I did it just a bit different -- rather than piggyback the spring, I went off to the side so that there is no possibility of the coils binding:

Haha....I've had this problem forever, but never drove the car enough to really care about it that much....but now seeing how easy it is to fix, it's definitely getting attended to.

The key works too. It would be nice to have remote opening that worked. Guess I'll get the spring on my next trip to home depot. Thanks for the tip.

Did you read that webpage I posted? In figure 6, number 6, it clearly shows with a picture and explanation what you do. Or like Jeff and Jon have discussed above, you can add it to that location.

Read that webpage, it answers your questions.
