Why is it called a Berger panel

I know I may get some grief asking this lol, but I do not own one. I have seen alot of talk about the "Berger Panel" and I was just wondering why is it called that...just curious...

Named after Berger Chevrolet, the dealership that sold many of the GMMG cars, in which they had the back panel painted black on some, so the name Berger Panel stuck. Typed really fast, hope it makes sense.

    Sadly now demodded :(

The "Berger Panel" emulates what Chevy did to the 1st and 2nd gen cars to differentiate between a SBC SS (tail panel is body color) and BBC SS (tail panel is painted black). Note that most Berger cars are modified from stock.

Mods: As this is the 4th of 5th time I've seen this question maybe it should be part of a stickie (if it isn't already).....

No offense....but why would you put a flat black contrast pannel back there? I think they look bad, just my opinion!

IIRC, buying the car from "Berger Cheverolet" (in the 60's the logo was "prescribed Horse Power by Berger" with parts thrown into a pistle being mixed up) included the panel and upgrades to a 380 hp engine....

My Camaro prior to Berger panel:

Older pic, but after the Berger panel was installed. Added a lot of character to my Camaro:

I hate badges/emblems really. I almost filled in the Camaro on the rear. I didn't put the bowtie or "SS" back on. I have contemplated removing the "SS" from the fenders as well. I actually do have the Berger and GMMG badge, I just won't put them on.

Well as 67camarorsss described, it goes back to the early Berger days when they were doing this on 67-72 camaros. Berger has been around for a long time and have made a strong reputation for themselves. Those cars from the 60's and early 70's command 6 figures nowadays.

GM was blacking out the tailpanels as well on their bigblock camaro SS's to seperate them from the small block cars back then.

But I do agree they kinda look strange on a 4th gen to me. But thats just the old school coming out in me thinking it belongs on a 1st or early 2nd gen.

Ya it's cleaner, just the panel looks outta place to me without the badge to go along with it. Again thats just the old coming out in me.
I'm not a fan of removing the SS emblems either though, that's kinda what distiguishes the car from all the other 4th gens running around.

I suppose it varies for me...like I really didnt like it from what I have seen but Y2k's looks better with it...I guess its the car...but that is also like posing unless you have alot of HP...its like throwing SS badges on and RS or something...or Z06 badges on a TA...I know those guys get alot of shit for that...so should the stock camaro guys w/ berger panels.

To each their own, do what you want with YOUR car. Preston's is an exception to the berger panel, i've seen a few look good like his, but then i've seen more than a few that the berger panel just doesn't belong with the look of the car.
