Well I just ordered Red Line's street engine oil at 10w-30. From what i can tell its as good as the purple stuff but i got e better "fuzzy" feeling from them then what I got from Royal Purple. not too much more if you order it on-line. 6.95 a quart with a gallon size that gets you the bulk discount. and ordered the K&N oil filter. also got a new fuel filter. ACDelco... I assume that is a good enough brand. I use their gaskets and have been as happy as you could get from a gasket... ... ...

9 out of 10 engines that blow up have a Fram attached to them.

No, not really, or at least probably not... but still, I've seen far too many engine losses that "happened" to be paired to a Fram oil filter.

I use royal purple 20w50 with preminum black AC deloc filter. Also have used red line and it is just as good as Royal Purple but they don't have a 20w50.

When to Change From 5W30 to a heavier weight

I am curious to know what information goes into the decision for switching off of the factory recommended 5W30 weight oil to something heavier like 10W40 or 20W50?

Does this screw with the computer as it was programmed to have 5W30 running through the engine? Or does it even matter?

    Thanks,
    Jim

I use K&N and ONLY MOBILE 1 5W30 SYNTH. That's the only thing I run in any of my cars or trucks.....I've tried various others but I prefer MOBILE.

Besides the MOBILE 1 is the recommended from the factory!!!

No it does not screw with the computer at all. The computer ahs no way of knowing if it is 30 weight or 25\50 its all hte same. The reason for going to a higher weight is for a motor that sees high rpm's alot or is just run hard or is built. The better the vicosity the less of a chance it will have of thining out under extreme heat. You don't want that to happen, because it will drop oil pressure and you can cause internal damage. Hope this helps.

Royal Purple and a K&N filter. A bit expensive but well worth it!

I prefer Redline when it is available. Royal Purple when it is not - RP is available at NAPA.

My first TA was stolen off the rack at the local dealership and was being worked on to replace the A/C compressor. To do the job the lower water hose was pulled so there was no coolant. The morons who stole it left a 70 foot burnout and drove it like they stole it, according to witnesses.

The water trail led to a spot a mile away and they either pushed the car from that spot or drove it onto a flatbed.

The next night they crashed the car on the way to the chop shop - lost control in a neighborhood and hit a parked car. The water hose had been replaced.

I bought the wreckage, and pulled the engine. When I checked the internals there was no sign of abuse. Pulled the heads and the cylinder walls were bright and shiny. No scoring or burning was evident.

I attribute that fact to the Redline Oil it was using.

I use Mobile One filters because cheaper filters are made of paper. Mobile One and K&N use fiberglass filters. All paper filters break down after 3000 miles. If you use a premium oil and change at 5k miles, the paper filter quit filtering 2000 miles ago. (Delco is a paper filter - a very good paper filter, but still paper - only OK if you change it every 3k miles.)

    Regards,

    Darden

OBTW, I have two degrees in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and have spent 25+ years flight testing experimental turbine engines.
