    What motors?
Ever motor is different. Compression, material of the heads, cooling all play a role.

The LS1 WILL ping/detonate if you run anything but premium.

Just because you are not hearing anything doesn't mean the motor isn't pinging,,,as I said, the computer is pretty quick to pull timing, usually before it's even audible.

Boy if I could post a pic it would be perfect for this thread.

I just took a customers 327 apart and 4 out of the 8 flattop pistons were severely pitted on top,,,,from you guessed it,,,,,pinging.

This was only a 10:1 motor running on premium pump gas,,,,should have been fine but the tune sucked.

It's really a fine line,,,,and the pump gas is only getting worse.

GM reccomends premium. They do not require it.
    Their is a difference.
    Your car will be fine.
I never run any thing under premium.

You don't run 11:1 motors on anything less then premium. If you can't afford the gas you shouldn't own the car.

F bod gas tank is 15.5 gallons
    Regular- $3.55 x 15.5 = $55.025
    Pemium- $3.83 x 15.5 = $59.365
    Savings $4.34 per tank
The owners manual recomends premium fuel, I always assume thats for a reason. Is a $4 savings per tank worth the cost of major engine repairs latter on down the road?

I use premium, too and here in good old Europe they're really ripping you off, but I love my Camaro so I always get premium 98 octane.

GM recomends that premium fuel be run, because when the engine is run on regular, it will ping. They want our cars performing their best, and getting the best mpg possible. When the knock sensors sense the ping , the PCM retards the timing, which reduces power, and mpg. Running the car with regular will cause some pinging, but not enough to damage anything. That's why GM recomends it, and not mandates it.

But hey, what do I know. I'm just a 41 year old GM certified, and ASE certified GM Service Tech., and have been for 15 years.

Keep running low grade gas until you get a hole in a piston then its to late to switch to premium. I run premium and sometimes run octain booster to prevent pinging(detonation).

Have you run regular, and burned a hole in your piston? Or are you just talking without experience?

Since gas prices have crashed im back to using premium for the first time again, regular was 3.22 today, and premium was 3.51.

Point is Ive been on regular gas for several months, I didnt think anything was wrong, but it seemed like my car was getting tired, didn't quite have the pep it used to. Ive done all the 100k mile PM work, no significant change. My last tank of gas I went up to midgrade, and boom my car came alive again, I filled up with premium today, well see how that goes.

doesn't it cause pining if you don't have the proper octane?

While this might be true....I have personally seen a stock internal LSx ping running our mid-grade. It pulled 10 degrees of timing at WOT from 3400RPM on on a dyno.

In short....spend the extra $1-2 a tank and put premium in it. Worth it!
Hes not bullshitting, it IS worth it. You can run more risks then just knocking too, less common, but still can happen.

I mean it's pretty much been said.. but if you want a big boy toy you have to give it big boy loving ... I think your heavy on the pedal .. just getting into a car like this.. young age .. probably doing burn outs.. because others tell you too.. I went through that phase when I had my first sports car .. did all of the same..

Until I had to pay out of pocket for my first set of speed rated tires lol.. pay my own car insurance and gas.. long before gas was outrageous..

I'd say it's wellll worth spending the whole extra $2-$3 dollars you'd save in gas putting less than premium in, benefit from the mileage, benefit from the performance, and avoiding the rattling or knocking .. depending on where you live.. will determine how much knock you'll hear as well so why risk it?

Best of luck and that's a pretty ass black SS.. You gotta get someone with a good camera to get some clear shots so you can post them!!
