Which way to go: LT1 or LS1?

I'm new to the forum and I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, so excuse me for asking again...................I'm new to the Camaro scene and am looking to pick up my first one...........I've seen some really nice '97 LT1's and '98 and up LS1's, mostly stock.
My big question is am I better off going with the LS1 in the long run.?
If I do find either an LT1 or LS1, that is mostly stock, my plan is to mod to get at least 400 RWHP. Also, the car I'm looking for must be a six speed.
Any or all thoughts are appreciated.

LT1s are going to be a LOT less expensive than LS1s... but they have more complications such as the opti and such. LS1s are much closer to your goal and dont take much more than a cam to get you there. Kinda depends on what you want to spend, and what appeals to you.

it really depends on what body style you like best. i like 93-97 camaros and 98-02 trans ams. i have owned several different cars and it is personal preference. a stock ls1 car will out run a stock lt1. but if you spend the extra money you save on mods for the lt1 it should out run a stock ls1 if you spend it in the right places such as sfc and 4.10's headers and so on. everyone hates opti spark but they make coil conversions for them so pic the car you like me personally would pick the nicest car i could find and remember if a car has alot of mods it has probably been run hard??so good luck and post some pics of the cars you are looking at and people will give you there thoughts.

he brings up a good point... I bought my T/A for 20k... but buddy bought his LT1 for 6... she said if he puts the 14k into his that I spent extra on mine... he would blow the doors off of just about anything... and he is 100% correct... but like Luciangage said... its all on preference.

Personally, I prefer the LS1, which definitely offers more power higher up in the power band. The LT1 is a great motor and has plenty of "umph" down low, however the LS1 are screamers (especially after you open them up). At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference and appearance. From a cost standpoint, you can get an LT1 cheaper and have extra cash to spend on mods. On the contrary, the LT1's did have their fair share of problems (opti, etc.) and they are in older model cars. From my experience with my 89 Vette, I've learned that (even despite low mileage and being babied) as a car gets older it inherently starts to run into more and more little problems.

Go LS1. A clean LT1 is not much cheaper than a clean LT1. Maybe 2-4K. Most CLEAN LT1's go for 7500ish. A clean 98 LS1 wont be much more at all.

I currently own both and like them both. I wouldn't let the motor keep you from buying a nice example. Although it's getting harder to find a nice 93-97 since the latter end of the scale is approaching 10 years old already,,,hard to believe. But they are all great cars. I still enjoy my LT1 even though my LS1 is faster,,,there is really alot more about these cars to enjoy.
Both can make the HP you are looking for. Happy hunting. Larry.

    96 TA WS6 with LS1/Trans

Hey man, Ive owned three TA's and mine is a 96 TA WS6 which Im currently doing a LS1 conversion too. If I were you I would go with a TA or Camaro that already has a LS1 in it. LT1's are sweet but LS1's are sweeter! Just be careful where and who you buy your car from. Make sure that it hasn't been run into the ground no matter how good it looks.
