    smokey camaro

my friends got this camaro...well he had the bright idea to gut out the catlytic converters.....now all of a sudden when he revs it...it throws out smoke..and the engine vibrates the whole car when at a stop...is all this due to the damn catlytic converters??

i believe the smoking is due to the cats being gutted out... the cats are ment to clean out the air before it leaves the exhaust so with them being gutted there is nothing to clean up the air, so you will see some black smoke coming out. the shaking shouldnt be due to that but i could be wrong.

    Just my Opinion

Unless I am putting togrther a race machine as opposed to a street drivable camaro I would never gut a cat. There are plently of other proven power mods without going that route for such small gains and the opening of Pandora's box. IMO

Gutting the cats will make it run a little on the rich side. Thats why it is throwing out smoke. Black smoke right? Black smoke denotes excessive gas. No big deal can tune it out. Rattling could be loose bolts, material still in the cat etc. try to locate the rattle first then go from there.

ohhhh...we think the whole engine rattle could be a malfunctioning fuel pump...the whole car rumbles when under 20mph..... but you are right about the black smoke..thx!

yes. and where do you get these theories as to why it rumbles? get it tuned, his free mod of gutting the cats might have just cost him $350 for a tune. are you sure the front oxygen sensors are plugged in?
