I was referring to a 4th gen. I know there are plenty of cars out there that have similar output.

What is OP? I understand SLP put different options into different SS's Example one might be completely the same as mine but maybe doesnt have the SLP air lid. However I was almost certain that ALL SS's went to SLP? Thought SS's were actually Z28's just a select few were sent to SLP for the SS package. Can anyone confirm that im right or wrong?

OP means original poster, in this case me. Not all cars went to SLP, the cars that went to SLP got added options such as lids, cme, etc.

I thought even the hood was SLP. I just really thought all SSs went to SLP.

^ I thought the same thing. The SS package is not a GM package. This is from Chevy Camaro RPO Codes It says WU8 SS Package 320hp (non-Chevy Mod. by SLP Engineering). Granite i looked that up under 1999 but i would imagine 98,00,01,02 are the same.

I haven't looked into that in a long time, but I seem to remember it was year specific, possibly early on...

All the SS's will have the WU8 code signifying it's status, but only some of them have the Y2Y code that designates SLP options. Those are the ones I'm referring to.

ALL SS's from 98-02 will have a WU8 RPO code on the drivers side door signifying that it is an SS. However if additional SLP options (chrome wheels, bilstien suspension,DD exhaust...etc) were ordered on top of the standard SS package, there should be a Y2Y RPO code. If you have the Y2Y RPO code and are unsure of the options SLP put on your car, all you need to do is call them and give them your VIN #. They will let you know the options along with the SLP Build #. So that being said, was it GM or SLP that installed the hood, spoiler, etc.? If it was GM then from what im reading is that your car could be an SS(WU8) but have no SLP options (meaning no Y2Y code) Maybe someone can expand on this.

The only thing I can see to expand on would be the Y2Y code. If you have that RPO code, the passenger door with then have an SLP sticker that will list all the SLP options they installed. No Y2Y code in the RPO's, then no SLP option sticker on the passenger door.

All Z28's that were designated to be sent to SLP to be made SS's received their new hood and spoiler from SLP and were pre-painted and installed at SLP by one of their competent body men which is why the color is not a spot on match and the finish was generally a little smoother than the rest of the vehicle. 1996-1997 models were sent to SLP with all their parts intact and recieved their new ones while there. 98-02 cars were shipped to SLP with no rear spoiler and a slave hood and then recieved their new upgraded parts.
I found this on www.ssz28.com] hope that helps

Yes, and one clue to that explanation if you pay close attention....

If you have ever looked at a factory painted SS hood, the bottom side is clear coated with the rest of the hood producing a shine. GM didn't do that. Gm factory hoods just had the base paint without clear under the hood, just like the inner fenders and firewall. GM only cleared the top of the hood. GM did the same thing under your decklid and trunk compartment. GM was pretty cheap with the clear coat only spraying what was absolutely necessary.

So this would mean that all SS's went to SLP for the hood and spoiler (WU8). However the option to add other SLP options was optional and would have a Y2Y code. So it is possible to have a base SS but either way they would have all had to have gone to SLP. Does that sound right?

That's how I always assumed it went for the 98-02. However wasn't there something different for the early 96-97 SS's?

I believe I read something that GM had the hood/other body componets already installed prior to being sent to SLP. I didn't do much research on 96 and 97.

    That sounds right.

I think the hood and spoilers, and other standard SS parts like the sway bars were supplied to GM through SLP, and installed at GM. The cars that had extra cost SLP options were then sent to SLP as a completed SS car, and other SLP options were added.
However it would seem GM would know which cars ahead of time since the GM RPO sticker had Y2Y on it signifying it was destined for SLP for finishing options.

There was something different about the 96-97 models and I just can't recall what.

Thanks. I learned alot more by researching this. Thanks for posting the SS build breakdown. It was really cool being able to break it down that far.
