price set up for the 9" i got for the jeep

62" housing that matches the track width of the cherokee
-$50 on half price day at the junkyard- complete

found out that the bearings on the whole thing were new so I didnt have to replace anything but the seals which ran a whopping $20.

ring and pinion I can get through work for about $140 going with 4.56's

and I need to have the shafts re-drilled for the jeep pattern. this will be about $50

however, instead of redrilling I am looking at a set of custom shafts from moser or currie which is still only about $350
I got a buddy who works at a shop with a pres brake so hw is going to make me some perches and shock mounts.

    things to remember:
-axles out of trucks and late model big cars will have the larger bearing that you want
-truck axels are more likly to have 31 spline axles
-31 spline axles can be narrowed, 28 spline ones can not
-any third member will fit any other, unless it came out of a Lincoln(those are stupid)

i asked him all that here's what he said

i bought my 8.8 on ebay. you gotta cut most of the 8.8 axle tubes off.....weld in axle tubes from a 7.5 rear and then fab a tq arm mount. prolly easier just to get a 9" housing and axles and find a used chunk

if you could find an 8.8 already fabbed up id go for it, other than that id go with a 12 bolt or 9"

Stock ford ranger rear end not strong at all. I had a 98 splash with the 4.0 that I did work to. I use to snap axels like it was nothing. The axel and ring gear is for the stock V6 or inline 4 motor. It can't handle the power of your LS1 stock. You would have to rebuild it. Not worth the money. Jsu pick up a moser 12 bolt. Very strong!!

Would it be hard to get one out of a mustang? Are they any stronger?

no, the rearends in mustangs are the same. There is a rumor going around that the v8 explorer had a different pinion bearing and support that made it better. However, for the same money you can get a 9". Then you can have a good axle.

well a dude told me it was holding 500 HP in his buddys Impala SS. Thats where the whole idea came from. But like several have said a 9" is the ticket.

Well to get a 9 inch that is still like 2 grand, if we got it out of a mustang we can go into a junk yard and get it out.
So what is a good car that has a good rear end that is most likely to be found in a junkyard? (because it can be taken out cheaper that way)

Unless you plan on just having this car for the track. You don't need a 9"!! Besides you cannot put the 9" on the f-boby without a bit of fabrication. The Moser 12 bolt is way strong enough for any street application and just about strong enough for any track application. (key word here guys is just about)!! And it is a direct replacment for your 10 bolt rear end. Google Moser rear ends and get a price. Then Google ford 9" rear end plus install. and check out the price. Hope this helps

You can pick one up for about $2,000.00 ready to throw on the car.

Exactly, your still going to be dumping atleast 2 grand into the car.
My question is what car stock that is kind of common that has a good rear end? I rather go to a junk yard and pull out a strong rear out of something else for cheap and spend a little extra to get it installed and still pay a fraction of the price of going into a 9inch or 12 bolt

Not gonna happen.. It would cost almost that much just to get another rear end fabricated to fit your car. How much power are you making or trying to make?
