Question about ss 3rd brake light

Does anyone know the number on the 3rd brake light of the ss spoiler. Not the part number but the number stamped on the light itself (Ex. SAE U 97 DOT). I found someone whom has one but not for sure if it's a 96-97 or 98-02

I tried searching everywhere but have been unsuccessful. Thanks for any info.

the 3rd brake light on the spoilers from 96-97 and 98-02 are completely different. the 98-02 has the LED 3rd brake light (longer/narrower), while the 96-97 SS's thrid break light was smaller and used bulbs (looks like the z28 3rd brake light).

ask for a pic and then compare, you will see the difference i am talking about...

However, I cann't get a pic from the guy. He has a junkyard and got a wrecked camaro ss awhile back. The spoiler was damaged and he salvaged the light only. He has on record the number on the light (why he don't have the year I don't know.) He said he would find it if I wanted it only. He is old school and doesn't email or even use the Internet. I contacted him by phone.

From left to right it reads:
LG2730-SLP SAE U 97 DOT SLP NO. 10088

The SAE U 97 DOT is all i got from him and may be the same on 96-97 with-out other info. If someone has a 96-97 ss and knew for sure it would solve my puzzle.

Sorry I can’t give any help on the 96-97 SS 3rd brake light. I can confirm that the numbers and letters referenced above also appear on my 2002 SS.

I feel your pain when it comes to finding that particular part. GM Parts Direct has it shipped for around $138.00, however that’s a lot to pay if you’re simply trying to replace a cracked lense. I’m trying to do just that and can’t find a better price on it anywhere! Good luck with the guy at the junkyard….I hope it’s the part you’re looking for.

Talked to 96z28ss and his 96 ss, so it looks like it is the real deal.
