    Question:

    P0420 & p0430

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just bought a 2001 SS two days after bringing it home the check engine light came on, my hubby gutted the clogged converters and changed four o2 sensors. He reset codes with code reader and i cant get rid of P0420 and P0430, my question is will they stay on as long as the converters are gutted? Do i need to have them on the car to get the light to go away to go through NJ inspection? Can anyone help?

Without cats I believe those two codes will not go away unless you have the car tuned to get rid of them. I might be wrong though. Someone else will confirm.

You will also not pass inspection without cats unless you have the rear 02 sensors tuned out I believe.

I know i wouldnt pass state, but i was going to a private inspection. I guess thats what i need to know if the cats are necessary in order to get the codes to go away. I was assuming they were but my husband doesnt seem to think so for some reason. Thanks

Yes, the codes will remain if nothing is changed.

    3 Options:

    1) Put functioning cats back on the car
    2) Purchase O2 simulators
    3) Have car's computer reprogrammed to ignore these codes

Ok can you explain how the o2 simulators work? I did just purchase a code reader, so we did try resetting the codes obviously that didnt work. I am just afraid to spend the money on the cats and the light remain, honestly do you think it will go away if I replace them?

O2 simulators send a constant regulated signal to the computer showing that the 02's are working properly even though you have no cats.

Now where can i get these sensors, and I did replace 4 of the o2 sensors so if i reprogram the computer will the codes go away without the simulators sice the o2 sensors are all new? Sorry im such a pain in the butt!

The only two O2 sensors you NEED for the car to run properly are the front two. The rear two are not needed (only for emissions). They simply monitor whether the cats are working properly or not. Since you technically do not have cats, your rear O2 sensors are telling your computer "hey, the cats aren't working" and triggering your codes.

    Options:
    1) Put functional cats back on
    2) Have the two rear O2 sensors tuned out
    3) Purchase O2 simulators

I'm not sure where to get the simulators from. Google it. I had mine tuned out when I removed my cats.

    Sadly now demodded :(

You're ahead of the game having the rear O2's tuned out. Simulators have a way of not functioning properly or getting burned.
