    Noise driving me crazy

My 00 z/28 runs great, but it has a clicking noise at high rpms. Any idea what that could be? It sounds like its coming from the drivers side of the engine from the drivers seat. Ive never heard a noise like that before, and it wont do it at a free rev. Also, its an auto car with .273 gears. What gears are reccomended to get more in the quarter without losing too much gas milage? Dont get me wrong, it goes great now, but i could sacrifice some top end. Its only mods are a k&n filter, mass air flow sensor & housing, cat-back exhaust, Hypertech programmer, velocity stack, and low temp. thermostat. Any feedback would be great.

You might have an exhaust leak. I had the same problem when I put on my Longtubes/ORY. It wasn't to noticable when I reved the engine, but it tapped like crazy when I was raping it. You might just have to tighten up the clamps. Sometimes they just loosen up over time.

i also think you have an exhaust leak. mine is doing the same thing right now. i also had 273s and just put in 342s and it made a huge difference and the rpms are like i wanna say 2200 at 70 with an automatic. i would check the gas mileage but my speedo is still off so i kinda can't.

Rock stuck in the tire tread will create a clicking sound also.

I agree it could be just the exhaust leak. I would take the time and pull the valve covers and check the pushrods just for peace of mind. You never know what you might find, and it won't take very long. I have never owned a A4 but most of the guys around here usually run 3.73 for the Auto and 4.10 for the 6 speed. My buddies TA with 3.73 A4 runs about 2400-2500 at 70 not entirely sure but its in that ball park.

Its been a tossup between .342s and .373s. Ive been seeing alot about high stalls too, so I think maybe I'll wait and do both at the same time. I'm laid off right now so I'm trying to gather some facts while I save up. Any idea how much .373s and a 3000 stall will improve my quarter mile time? Will I need a tune after these mods?

I went from 2.73 to 3.42 and its awesome. I dont really know if I would of rather had 3.73s but why rev the shit out of your engine for no point. If you do alot of highway driving I would definately go 3.42s. It was a huge difference but gas is gonna go back up, if I had a stick I could see 4.10s but 3.42s are a great all around gear.

I went from 2.73's to 3.42's and gained .15 sec in the quarter. I now have 3.73's. The biggest gain was a high stall converter. I gained .4 sec on that alone. car has gone a best of 12.60's at ~107 with a best 60' of 1.76 on Nitto DR's. I hope to do better with some MT ET Streets.

At 85 mph (3k rpm) I got 22+ mpg last weekend driving 350 miles on the hiway.

I do not know how much it gained in the quarter, and for all I know it may very well even out because you will lose top end. But the seat of the pants feel is AWESOME. It comes off the line like a beast, of course I almost have full bolt ons and a tune, etc. For the cost about $150 for the gears, $100 for the install kit, $24 for the diff. fluid, $10 for the limited slip additive, and it was a master install kit that did not with axle bearings and some other stuff I cant remember so I just went GM parts on that stuff which cost me about another $100. And it was really cool that they gave me the wrong pinion seal which I figured out when the diff fluid was all over the ground 2 days later so got a gm pinion seal. TOTAL around $400 sorry for the long story. And you will need a tune after. I thought it was worth it, but its alot of messing around for a ten bolt. And also that price was without labor but cost me $400 total, I dont know what a shop would charge. So after that you get traction issues. My tires are 10.5 inchs wide and they break loose pretty easy, even around 35 mph which can be cool and very annoying.

    Question

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with the .342s. Maybe a stall too, depending on funds. Then I'll have to contact Frost for a tune, and I think that will do it till next year as far as my budget goes right now. I'm hoping to really notice a gain. Does a tune make a big difference, compared to stock?
