White CAMARO SS # 846- 2001
Need assistance 4 my 01 CAMARO SS engine
Hi every 1
I have 2001 CAMARO SS but the problem is the engine has been changed cauz the second owner of the car has brake the original SS engine, later he install it with another 5.7l engine but I cant specify 4 which car its??
I checked the engine number its 12550592 (written on the block) then I found its the same engine number used for 1997 Ls1 corvette C5 but C5 alternator its in the top right but the one i have its on bottom right?!!! also i get sure that the engine is for 1997 model car because the manfacture day wrote on the head was 26/10/97 !! (the sell man also told the 2nd owner its corvette engine)
we finish from the first part
2nd part
The same engine block had crack so I changed the block and put new model LUMINIA SS(also 5.7l) block in it and its written 12559378 on it but the other things like head, pistons, crank and other engine comonets are same for the old engine which had crack on its block
the question is,If I want to modify the SS from where should I start?? Since the block has been changed and I notice that only the front gasket of new block is different from the old block but the other things remains same (back gasket, top gasket and bearings of block)
Right now im driving the car and its just fine but u know when it come to modify the engine for example we cant install any model headers on any engine is that right guys???
I hope my writting is understandable and I need ur advice
U can say that the head its for 1997-1998 model and the block its for 2001 onwards
these are the pics of my recent engine
this is the alternator which placed bottom right

the numbers will be on the closest side to you in the front of the engine bay. 853 1997-2000, 241 2001-2004 they flow about the same judging by the egr block off it will say 853 on the heads.

seeing how the egr is gone you can get headers for any of the 98-02 models. If the headers come with air/egr fittings you can just get block off plates, have fun modding!

The 908 you read is the #806 upside down. 806 heads came on 97-98 vehicles, coupled with the fact you have the egr plug and info saying it was built in 97 that motor came from a 98 f-body. The major difference I found was that the valve covers are center bolt instead of perimeter bolt like the newer heads. This will not effect you doing a head swap up to 243's or anything like that. If you do a cam swap just change out the pushrods, lifter and valves I don't know alot about those heads so you might want to do some digging on ls1tech.com
Technically since your car is a 01 you downgraded motors since you are lacking the ls6 intake your car originally came with and the slightly (and I mean slightly) better 241 heads. The ls-6 manifold helps up from the 3000rpm and up but the gain is minimal with your mods.
oh and clean that engine bayLast edited by c5z28; 01-02-2009 at 11:57 AM.
