Try to find a not so busy road on a hot day, lower your tire pressure a bit and have at it. Start in the lower rpm range and work your way up.
My shifting is actually pretty good...

I guess i need to work on launches..

I guess that raises another question.....

when shifting from say 2nd into 3rd in an 1/8 mile situation, is it better to "chirp" into 2nd, or smoothly go into 2nd

^^^well if you're going smoothly, you are wasting time, maybe a tenth or 3. Sometimes I'm going down the track, when I hit second it feels like the ass end jumps sideways 2 or 3 feet, and I've watched videos of myself and I can hear rubber in all the shifts. So I guess that means I don't go smoothly....

Yes I'd say 8's should be easy stock, have you tried lowering your tire pressure? My buddy has a 00 Z28 lid cutout and is running 8.7 pretty consistantly and that's with 120k on stock clutch and all

Don't go smoothly in any gear, get it in there as quick as possible, but if you have a bad clutch I think that is why you are not in the 8s now. If you have your tire pressure normal, drop is down in the mid 20's at the track. Low tire pressure and is the track is prepped good the shift to 2nd and 3rd should be more of a grab than a chirp.

man i have an A4 now and at the track its so much better lanching than my old m6. by the way my first run at the track the other night was terrible because i spun bad then i lowered the tire pressure from 40psi to 20psi and ran the 8.7 so i would give it a try
