I can tell you from first hand experience, as I currently own both an LT1 convertable and an LS1 convertable.

My 97 Z28 is bone stock, and my 02 LS1 "was" bone stock at the time, although the 02 is an SS so slight advantage possibly here.

Anyway, I have ran both at the strip on numerous occasions, and the 97 runs 14.20's at 99 mph pretty consistently.
The 02 SS ran a best of 13.78 at 102 mph. Not a ton of difference here really. Both cars weigh almost the same with the 97 coming in at 3580 lbs. and the 02 SS coming in at 3620 lbs.
You can barely feel the difference between the two cars on the street,,,,,driving one and then jumping into the other, the difference in power is minimal.

To take this further,,,my wife was driving the 02 SS and I was in the 97 Z28, we went from a 30 mph roll. It took her a few seconds to start pulling away from me,,,I was hanging gears for all it was worth, but the 02 muscled about 2-3 car lengths in front of me by the time we hit 90 mph.
I didn't get destroyed by any means but it was clear the LS1 has a little more.

I like both cars, but the LS1 has many advantages, with the biggest being those 15 degree cylinder heads. The LT1 is still a fun little car with plenty of spunk. Larry.

what about a 96 z28 with cold air intake and aftermarket muffler 6 spd.

a 1999 z28 ls1 auto with ss hood intake and aftermarket muffler????

    who would win this one???

The LS1 is still gonna walk away. stock vs stock if both drivers can drive the ls1 is gonna win every single time. Same thing with the mods, ls1 is still gonna walk an lt1. I have yet to see a cam only lt1 hit 400hp.

Why is the ls1 make more power. Simple: The motor is aluminum and they redesigned the heads.

I don't think it has anything to do with aluminum construction of the motor, I would actually rather have the cast iron LS truck block to build on personally, and this is the route most people are taking for high HP applications. But you are right about the heads,,,,,15 degree cylinder heads have a huge advantage over conventional 23 degree heads.

As far as that race,,,it's really anyones game. On the street anything can happen and it's hard to truly say which one will win.

I love the lt1's but the heads flow alot better on the ls1. BTW I love the big body imp's.
