This is a discussion on ls1 or ls6 ss within the Camaro / SS forums, part of the Vehicle Specific category; i was reading up on my 2002 ss one night and noticed that GM had actually used some LS6 blocks ...

    ls1 or ls6 ss

i was reading up on my 2002 ss one night and noticed that GM had actually used some LS6 blocks instead of the LS1 blocks becuase they were running low on parts...i find this to be fairly interesting and was wondering if there is a particular way to finding out if it is a freak LS1 or something

The block has different casting #'s, other than that hp is the same. been proven before the cars all dyno in the same range with either block. I have one the last month cars that were made and mine is a LS1 block.

PM Redphoenix1998, he did a post on this, to how to find the stamping and that the LS6 block alone, does not give any f-body more power.

the 2000-2002 Camaros came with LS6 intake manifolds. The blocks are the exact same between an LS1 and LS6. The only thing that makes an LS6 is intake, heads, and cam.

The LS6 block is supposed to have bigger windows and better oil channels, and be smoother from what I read. Supposedly they should be a little more rev happy.

the 01,02 camaro also have a smaler cam ,so swapping a bigger cam will benfit the 01, 02 years a lot mor since th ls6 bottom end has more compression

i heard that aswell. supposedly, my shop said i have the ls6 block, so i got the idea then had all ls6 parts swapped onto my '02 (including factory ls6 heads that were then ported before installation) and i'm pretty happy with the results. the low-end isnt anything special but mid and top just screams. the car really needs headers to open everything up.

You only have and LS6 block.

The pistons, crank, connecting rods, etc are still common to the LS1 and not the higher end parts the LS6 comes with.

So swapping on the heads and cam won't mean you have a complete LS6.

Why would you put ported heads on your car beofre headers?

You will gain quite a bit from some LTs, ORY, and a good catback like magnaflow or corsa. I reccomend Magnaflow because its the best bang for the buck.

Stay away from the Flowmaster cat-back. There is a dyno thread of them compared somewhere on LS1tech.

ya, my friend from the shop said its beggin for headers...and that i realy should have them on with this setup.

i know the flowmaster isnt the best catback, but i dont have the cash to drop on another system right now..maybe later on down the line. the car runs awesome though and still have good driveability/reliability
