Lots of rain and big puddles=nononono

So stupid me not really driving in rain much! I am coming back from the gym and I see a puddle so I slow down to like 10mph and try to drive through it. My call sputters and shuts off. I try to start it up and it shakes violently and I just shut it off. A tow truck guy pulls me out. I call my dad and he thinks it might be the altenator belt. When I try to turn it on now the dash just goes blank and thats it. No cranking or anything. I checked with a flashlight and I see a shiny part where a belt could of been. Right next to the LID like under it. What do you guys think? And how expensive is that belt?

Belt is very cheap/ Wouldnt cause it to shake violently. You dont have a form of cold air induction do you?

Lets hope something is shorted out. and you didnt suck up some water and thrown a piston out the side of the block. Loosing any fluids??

Check all battery connections and wiring. There is a lot that could have happened

I hope for you that it’s just the belt. Like JoshieDoom said hopefully you did not get any water in the engine, because if you try to start a engine with any water in the cylinders your are going to bend or break a rod which normally then cracks the block. General rule of thumb is if your car ever dies after you drove through a puddle never try to restart it! Tow it home, pull the spark plugs and let the cylinders dry out. It’s also a good idea to change the oil after all this as well.

Well it seems like the altenator because it loses battery or so when I try to turn it on. No crank or anything now. I'll update you guys soon. I DID notice a belt look like it was missing though. It was hard to tell at night.

it is pretty easy to notice if the belt is there or not

it sounds like the alternator/battery if the belt is still there

Well regardless if the belt is there or not, It would still crank. First thing you need to figure out is why it wont crank. How deep was this puddle? Any mods? Did you try getting a jump or checking the battery for volts? May have fried the starter if it was deep enough, also check all your fuses and ensure your fuse box isnt puddled.
You should have two belts, one for ac and one serp belt for all the Ass. Take a pic and post and we can tell you if its missing or not.

It was only up to my body. It wasnt even to my door. I could open my door without getting water inside the car. Only the free ram air mod. I am going to do all those things when my friend comes to pick me up right now.

sounds like you sucked up water, and have hydro locked the motor, if this is the case, its probably cracked the block./

Ya, that was a pretty decent storm last night. I drove through a giant puddle and could hear the water slapping the floor of my car. I was going like, 5 mph and didn't have any problems.

Yep thats what happened. Dont know about the block though. I know I got water sucked up. What does cracked block mean? My friend is going to fix it. I bought new oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter the whole schebang.

It sounds very similar what happened to me back in September when we had some very heavy rain here in Chicago. I was going down the street and saw some water in the road. I slowed down below 10 mph and drove through it and got some water into the intake due to the free ram air mod. The car started shaking violently and I had the car towed. It turned out I hydrolocked the engine and bent the #7 connecting rod. Long story short I put an LS6 crate engine in it and haven't looked back. One of the most stupid and costly decisions I have made in my life. I hope you don't have the same issue.

If you got water into the engine you are going to need a lot more than an air filter plugs and an oil change.

Take out the plugs and disconnect the coils, turn it over and listen. Put plugs, in change oil and all that crap. Most likely you have fried the engine. But there may be a chance.

Well I'll find out for sure tomorrow. Lets say it is a cracked block. I do NOT have the money to buy a new engine. What should I do? Dealers wont take it. I still owe my loan on it. Will gap cover it as a complete loss?

Insurance may cover it as an act of nature if you have full coverage. I'd notify them.

Give them a shout and see what they say. Once you get it to crank you will know for sure either way. You can also turn the balancer pulley with a wrench and see if the engine turns, if it does then its not seized.
