good sleeper mods
i wanna get my 01 ss to about 400hp at the crank but the car needs to look stock (no exhaust mods) and sound pretty close to stock. what can i do with bolt ons to reach that number if i even can? i'd love to run with the new corvettes

well you could do a 100 shot of nitrous...
STS turbo with stock cam wont be loud till u nail it ....
idk, headers would make it loud, and a cam with stock exhaust would still probably be loud

RED 35TH ANIVERSARY PKG- 2002 CAMARO SS 35th LE
I would say go with SLP.. If money is not an issue.. The bolt-on pkg they got is 400hp at the crank.. Which is about 350' somethin at the wheels. and TQ is around 350... At that you should be runnin like Mid-High 12's.. I seen this guy with the similar pkg but, he had 4:11 gears.. With slicks he was runnin around 12.4 to 12.5.. Consistant too.. So if you wanna stay stock I would say go with this setup.. To keep it even quiter I wouldn't put the SLP loud mouth I would go with a cat-back set up..
If that is not in your price range then a good mild cam would do.. Nothing too radical.. just somethin mild that will work..

Why though? I know where you're coming from and all with the sleeper thing to catch people, but you already have an ss. you really cant sleep one of those because of the hood and spoiler. and what do you mean by sleeper exactly. do you want people to think its not modded or that its a 6 cyl. or what. not very many people are going to pull up to a camaro and not expect it to go. stock these things scream. im all for keeping a low profile but you dont have to sacrifice good parts to do it. a catback would be good and a cam and that will be alittle louder but if youre not W.O.T.ing it all the time people wont pay any more attention than they normally would. i support you but you might as well face the fact that we have badass cars on this site and someone is going to know youre packing heat no matter what you do.
good luckoh great intentions, ive got the best of interventions...

i had a pretty good sleeper set-up on my 99SS....
400rwhp, and you couldnt hear it commin.... until i opened the cut-out.
now it all depends on your budget.... but this is what i would do if i were you.
222/222 .566/.568 114 LSA cam
ANY good LS6 style heads with a 11:1CR
LS6 intake, ported TB, LID/filter...
ANY long tubes, w/cats, STOCK cat back...
4:10 gears, spec stage 3 clutch,
LCA, PHB, SFC, TQ arm.... and some good tires....
with that you should see around 415-435rwhp 380-400rwtq.
and should keep up with a C5Z06 and a reg, C6.
btw.... i pulled on my old 400rwhp SS with my stock Z06....
i think you might need 425+rwhp to pull on one.
just my 2 cents.315rwhp 98 SILVER Z28 (3500lbs)- SOLD
400rwhp 99 HUGGER SS (3375lbs)- SOLD
340rwhp 02 YELLOW Z06 (3040lbs)

white- 98 SS
I have a cam, LT's and some other common bolt ons with 4.11's and drag radials. I am at the 400 mark but with my SLP 2OTL exhaust the car is only a little louder than stock (until the cutout is uncorked - than it is ridiculous). Since the SLP 2OTL was a factory upgrade for 96, and 97 - you can't really tell my 98 is moderatley modded until the hood is open.

so a few things to make the car look stock
and sound stock as well while gaining 40-50hp at crank
1. pulley and belts = 8rwhp
2. the SLP cai (less than $200) = 5-6rwhp
3. Fast LSx intake = 5-6rwhp gain over LS6 intake which you have as SS
4. port your TB = 4rwhp
5. gears 4:11 for M6 or 3:73 for A4, gain good acceleration not power but it will make your ride faster
6. a good pro tune LS1Edit = 5-7rwhp no more than that since car is kindda stock
7. empty your car out, subwoofer box, amp, carpet mats, 1/4 tank of gas, spare tire out. = 50-60lbs less

You could take the hood, spoiler, wheels, emblems all off. Put some dog dish hubcaps and steel rims on there. No one would expect that thing to jump up and go like an SS does if it looked like that.... Thats my idea of a sleeper.,,,LOL.

I know this may not be cost effective, but would getting heads be a sleeper mod? I mean, does it make the car louder?
Plus, how much hp does that add alone?

At the rear wheels? Thats not bad.
A sleeper can be a car that doesnt open its hood too, ya know.

Pewter metallic- 2000 Camaro SS
Very true, and the casting marks could be grinded off as well. Probably more like 30 at the wheels but still not bad. You could probably pick up a set of LS6(243 casting) heads for a reasonable price and possibly throw in a LS6 cam(very mild, really hard to tell from sound that its not stock) and add some very solid HP.

For camshafts you could look at MTI. They have custom ground cams and have a few they call Stealth cams. These have very wide seperation angles to smooth out the idle, and there is even sound clips if you want to hear one,,,they purr like a kitten. You could have them custom grind a camshaft for your needs, and it would probably make a little more power than a GM LS6 camshaft would. That combined with CNC ported heads it would make great power and still sound like a stocker,,,would be a nice setup for an automatic car too for those that don't want a loose stall converter to drive everyday. Larry.

Hugger Orange- 1999 Camaro Z-28
MTI Stealth I or II (I for extra stealth-ness)
Ported LS6 Heads (243 casting) *milled for apx 11 compresion*
90/90 isnt worth it for that h/c set up... stay with the LS6
Shaner 3 p&p TB
ASP Pulley
if your not dead set on keeping manifolds go w. LT's or atleast Mids w. high flow cats
SLP Dual/Dual set up or something similar to keep it quiet
cut out
suspension & tires of course
and the most important factor... A GOOD TUNE!!!
this combo goes 400-420 in AUTO cars frequently... 11.2's-11.5's @ 12X's all day long
a trained ear can hear the SII but the SI is nearly impossible to hear
or for a more budget build get a set of used 243's & Z06 cam plus spay the bitch and really kick some ass for little $$$.... and NEVER have to change valve springs

Hey I started this thread a real long time ago and instead of bolt-ons i bought a warranty (i just started college i'd rather have the peace of mind.) if i did lt headers, cat back (magnaflow or borla) smooth lid, pulleys, maybe an MAF sensor, what would that put me at. i dont care if it's a "sleeper" any more i realized that's kinda retarded. What i'm lookin to do is not void my warranty. I was wonderin if any of yall know which of these parts may void a bumper to bumper gm warranty. also with all this stuff do i need a new cat-converter or could i keep the same one? any other "safe" mods ya'll can think of would be great... thanks
