Either 2.73's (GU2) with a steel driveshaft or 3.23's (GU5) with an aluminum driveshaft.

The codes can be found on the sticker attached to the left (driver side) door.

That's what the factory put in the diferential. Someone may have changed them along the way.

I replaced the steel ds with an aluminum ds and replaced the 2.73 gears with 3.73's in my 02.

I've always wondered, but what exactly is the difference? Is it just the driveshaft? Advantages/disadvantages for both?

Aluminum driveshaft is lighter in weight allowing for less rotational mass.

But the steel is stronger right? if you were making enough power, does the DS make that big of a diff?

you can always use the method of jacking up the car and turning the wheel one turn and mark the driveshaft to see how many times it turns

Any other differences between the 2.73 and the 3.23?

I like the 3.23 myself, pulls real nice off the line. You can roast the tires when you want, nice high end on the highway and pretty good gas mileage when compared to stock 2.73's Also Im not to worried about breaking the 10 bolt with it either. Not that it can't but no where near as likely as a 3.73 or 4.10

Were we given an option of gears when our vehicles were new?

Mine came with 3.23 stock, and I assumed that 2.73 was bottom of the barrel.

3.42 was only optional to M6's... if that makes a difference.

The correct answer is 2.73 with the steel driveshaft and 3.23 with the aluminum, but being that your car is an 02 there might be an issue.

My first 02 Z28 was produced the day before the last day of production and had a serial number that was 13 from the last car. It should have come with 2.73 gears and the A4. It had 3.08 gears and still had a limited slip and the aluminum driveshaft. I had a speed shop tell me that 3.08's were what I had and then a dealer confirmed that my car was produced with 3.08 gears and it definately was limited slip.

There was something else odd about options on the car but I don't remember what it was.

I've heard from other people that some of the last 150- 200 cars got what parts were left and not exactly what was supposed to be on the car.

lol... I'd be pissed. Whats next, they run out of interior parts so they put an office chair in the car as the drivers seat? The gear shifter is someones stapler?

3.42 ratio wasn't optional, it was the only rear gear if the car had an M6.

I've heard of this regarding A4 cars. Also I've heard that only 2.73 cars got the 3.08's (consider it an "upgrade" I guess). 3.08 was the gear ratio used with the V6 cars.

The limited slip was a TorSen 3 series which was the same regardles of engine or tranny.

Ahhh thank you sir, I thought you could get the 3.23's with the M6 as well, but I guess I'm incorrect.
