    Gas Mileage Sweet Spot

Clearly no one ever buys an LS1 Camaro for gas mileage; nonetheless, our cars get excellent highway mileage especially if equipped with a 6 speed. Most people don't believe it when I tell them that my engine is only turning at 1800rpm while going 80mph. Half of them think I'm bullshitting. Oh well, their loss for passing on one for that reason.

What I want to know is if anyone has found that elusive 'sweet spot' in 6th gear where you get the best mileage. Air resistance becomes a major factor the faster you go, but at the same time you don't want to bog the engine down. I typically go about 75 on the highway, so overall with city driving I get about 20mpg or so, and that's with about 30% highway.

One thing I wish we had is that instant gas mileage meter that comes equipped on some GM vehicles (But I think we all know why GM didn't put one in).

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

I think you're there 70-75 seems to do the best, especially on long road trips. Cruising under 2K in 6th seems to drink less fuel.

I generally go 70-75 on the interstate/parkways as well; I get about 27.x mpg.

EDIT: oh yeah, that's with CAI and custom exhaust (and no cats), if anyone's wondering.

Well, my best with my '98 TA AT 2.73 was 27.1, usually 25.5-26.8. With the '00 WS6, I got a best of 26.5 before my Hooker long tubes and ORY, now I have gotten 27.9-28.4, driving 75-80 with AC on as needed.

With my mild cam, full exhaust, and tune I have found that when I keep it around 75 I can get up to 27 MPG or so. However, once I start going up to 80 I usually average 22 MPG. Traffic and my mood affect MPG the most though.

i go to a gas station as close to the freeway as possible, fill it up but dont top off, reset your trip, get on the freeway and drive at least 35 miles, get off the freeway, go to a gas station and basically fill it up just till it clicks, then devide miles driven vs gas you just put in, will give you an accurate mpg hwy

Don't forget air filter too. I'm sure you replace it regularly if you're using paper, but even the k&n style wears out if not cleaned properly/regularly

And if it's still not up to par, hit it with something to clean out the carbon (i.e. seafoam).

And sometimes the MAF sensor gets gummed up

please god no seafoam, there has been no proven testing saying that shit helps your engine, hell if you think that smoke coming out when you use it is old carbon and deposits you are so wrong, ill sell you a bottle of water, tell you to hook it up to the vacuum and say the white smoke is good, its cleaning the engine. but id be lying and trying to make a quick buck, there has been myths since the dawn of cars like pouring atf down the engine and it cleans, or taking diesel and cleaning out the cats lol, none of this works you know what works, maintenance maintenance maintenance

ive used auto rx., with minor results, it actually helped out a few diesels im in charge of taking care of,

I was just thinking in terms of dirty fuel injectors. There's a number of products out there that can be added with a tank of gas to clean injectors. Just threw seafoam as an example because I've heard of people picking up 1 or 2 mpg from that back when I worked at a repair shop a few years ago.

I agree with you though about that bullshit with people dumping crap down their brake booster vacuum hoses. Only results are probably ruined cats and a failed emissions test.
