Q: Did the put the VIN on the drivetrain components? I've never bothered to check.

No they never did so technically there are no "numbers matching" cars anymore as long as it has an ls1 block in it or and ls6 in an 01-02 no one could prove its not the original engine. With that said I'm not sure what the op means

I think he means the number on the rear of the block on the drivers side. Just below the deck where the head seats to the block. It's the only number I know about, and it's just a part #.

Does the engine have a part number or reference number stamped on it for identification as well as a chassis number somewhere on the chassis.
These are seperate to the VIN number. It is just that the joker that was doing the certifying couldnt find the engine number . I think that they like all that information on the registration papers and to check that it hasnt been stolen or the likes. It has to go back again after I get a few minor issues sorted such as new brake discs, and headlights adjusted correctly for driving on left side of road .. This is a more thorough check for certification than the normal six monthly warrant of Fitness we have in New Zealand
