just leave the MTI lid on there. All lids are basically the same.
The K&N or Volant might get you a couple of extra 2-3hp but not worth the $$ if you already have the MTI lid. Move on to another mod.

i used to have a lid but recently went w/ volant. I wanted to have a sealed system and also a better looking setup, despite the fact that it probably didnt get me near enough hp to justify the extra expense. The volant looks great and it fit quite well even w/ my bigger maf and smooth below. It is a lot cleaner b/c you remove alot of the factory plastic (radiator shroud).
I also took a dremmel to my slp hood openings (doubled their size) to allow for more air into the sealed portion of the setup.

I have the k&n f.i.p.k. & it looks good. I dont have the ss hood so for a ram air i took the upper part of the air guid plastic out & cut the area of the heat guard from the radiator out from under the filter it gets alot of cool air from the lower spoiler.

Keep your lid and roll on as stated above. Not worth the extra $$$ for you to upgrade for only a few extra ponies you would gain.

does'nt really matter on the intake unless you have like a system that pulls air from under the car to the intake but the stock type doesnt matter

In one of the last issues of GM HTP they did an airlid comparison. They judged all the lids on seal, fit, finish, hp gains, and price. The compeditors were the SLP, Grannatelli, MTI, Texas tuning? not sure, and one or two others. The SLP was the winner with best seal, hp gains, and finish. All were about 100 bucks. I'm sure with the CAI the SLP is definitely worth it and will be what I'm buying.

I just got a Volant intake for 40 dollars. A guy is in the process of Procharging his car so he had no need for it. I had the FRA mod before with my lid, and I cut underneath the Volant plastic where the radiator sits for more air to get trapped into that intake. It also looks 100 times better than a lid.

Choose a lid and filter that fits your budget.
There all going to get you about the same power. Its a different story with intake manifolds, headers and exhaust. Normally with those the more you spend the more power you get.

I have the complett SLP Kit and I´m happy with it.When you have a ramairhood like the SS or the ultra Z hood than is the K&N kit better because of the bigger surface of the filter, I think so.
Without a ramair hood you have more hot air under the hood and that cost HP.I had seen K&N kits with open filter on German car wich have less HP than stock , when the hood are open on the dyno than they had more HP than the stock one.

Just keep the lid and spend the $ on something else. I had the Volant and liked it but don't think for the price that it really gave me much over the lid. I ended up selling it for $75 after I sold my WS.6.

Hey beanie (or others with same mod),
when you made the opening to the hood larger, what happened to the black mesh cover thats on there, did you take it off?? Do you have pics...it would really help as I am thinking about making the hood opening on the 98 SS larger as well.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

and post some pics of the slp system. i'm wondering where the metal catch box in the system goes and how it works? my hood drops the air right in front of my lid opening so i'm confussed?
