    Challenged

I've just purchased an 02 Camaro SS (stock A4) and wouldn't you know I've been challenged by a buddy of mine "WHO DESPIES CHEVROLET'S" with a 95 mustang. His car runs consistent 7.20's in the1/8th.

    My questions to you are:

I want to be able to beat him and still have a daily driver, is this possible?

What combinations have some of you used?

What are some good reputable shops I can get the work done at?

How much horsepower do you think is needed?

A 95 mustang? What mods are done to his? Stock vs. stock, the SS will completely own him. Hell my TBSS beats up on 5.slow mustangs all day long.

It's an 02. it already has an LS6 intake.

Shortest path to quickness with these is a stall torque converter. I'd seriously think about SFC's so you don't twist the car into a pretzel though.

If he's really running 7.20's in the 1/8 it's gonna cost a lot of $$$ to catch him.

    7.20's in th 1/8 = ~ 11.20's in the 1/4.

Stock your car is a mid 13's ride unless you've got a factory freak. Even then it'll be high 12's. Hope you got some looooong green.

I'm not sure what he has in his car but it does run 7.20's.

Approximately how much does to make a camaro run those numbers?

How much what? Horespower? Torque? Cubic dollars?

    I know a guy who has LT's, TD's, a 3400 stall and a 150 wet shot and he's only down to 11.60's.

At this point he's verging on needing a cage to run at the track. 11.49 and quicker and you need a cage. He already has half a fire suit due to the nitrous.

I know a guy who got his car into the mid 10's but it took a fully forged bottom end, heads and cam, a 250 shot, LT's + TD's and a 4.10 geared 12 bolt to go with his 'Viperized" M6.

    Like I said: CUBIC DOLLARS!

Like the sign sez: Speed is just a question of money. How fast can you go?

    True duals, stall, cam, headers.

One hell of a daily driver, 600 hp! Your gas mileage will be kaput. I think it'll run you around 5 grand (ebay). One of these guys will know for sure. Definitely it can be done.

edit: Oh, and you need 2 grand in a new rear end / suspension or you'll tear it off the first time you race him. You could buy an 11 second car and keep your other as a daily. That guy invested big in his car he's proud you better man up if you want to talk smack.

Uhh, a 7.98 1/8 is like a 12.5 1/4. Your completely stock car did this??? No stall, nothing, bone stock? No drag slicks? Come on, something doesn't make sense.

If you have $13K to spend then you have a BUNCH of wonderful options. Ultimately it will be up to you to determine which setup will work best for your needs.

Here are my thoughts and some (very rough) figures:

    1. A4 upgrade + Stall + 12 Bolt rear-end $4,000
    2. AFR or TFS Heads and a solid 23x/23x cam (opinions will vary on the specific cam....a custom grind will likely best suite your needs) + tune $3,000
    3. Nitrous setup -- A 150 shot should be more than enough! $1,000
    4. Supporting Bolt Ons: Full exhaust (LT, Y, catback or duals, etc.), U/D pulley, Lid and filter, CAI, etc. $1,500
    5. Suspension mods: SFC's, V6 rear springs (will assist with traction), DS Safety Loop (will be required) $750
    6. Tires -- You make the call on this one, but if you're looking for that type of performance and you want the car to be a DD, I'd pick up a second set of rims to mount the slicks on. $750

That puts you around $11K and you should be easily able to crack low 7's in the 1/8 mile. Keep in mind that you may also need additional safety items to meet NHRA requirements(roll cage, etc.).

Alternative paths would include supercharger, turbo, 408 build, etc. There are a bunch of ways to get you where you want to be.

Finally, if your buddy is truly ripping 7.20's in his 1995 Mustang, he has one very impressive build. It would take a good bit of work to get that car to that point, however I have no doubts that it could be accomplished.
2002 Camaro SS M6, 2.5 PRC 5.3L heads, TFS 228/230 cam, FAST 92, bolt ons + a 10 lb bottle in the back.

1989 Corvette L98, A4, Full bolt ons, etc.
