The 98's also had larger injectors, and individual coil packs. It's really debatable if they had more incidents of "piston slap". I'm not sure on when they moved the egr valve though.

Author it all depends on your preference. The 01/02's have slightly more power then the 98-00, due in large part to the LS6 (Z06) intake manifold. I've also heard that they have a slightly larger cam then the 99/00, but I dunno for sure.

Most people purchase the 99 models, cause they are relatively affordable and had some of the glithces taken out of them.

I vote 01-02, I run an 01 SS a4, with just a lid and catback I pulled 319.5 rwhp ( non SAE corrected) my bud's 99 a4 WS6 pulled 307.3 with similar mods. I hear 98's had oiling issue's, but as of yet haven't seen any documented proof, I had piston slap when I got it at 38k miles, opened the block up at 64k and went through it stem to stern and had NO discernible cylinder damage ( stretched a rod ) Now that it's all back together no piston slap at all, noisy, but that's due to the stuff I had installed, not the LS1.

    01-02 hands down

Intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, clutch, and so much more better stuff.
