This is a discussion on auto guys only..what made you pick? within the Camaro / SS forums, part of the Vehicle Specific category; Yeah, I would say that constitutes a bad day in my book also. How did it happen?...

    Nothing exotic or exciting unfortunately.

I was carrying some boxes down some concrete steps and stepped on something.

Took the fast trip to the bottom.

I HEARD it break though I didn't really feel it break, so I thought it was maybe something in one of the boxes that broke.

When I tried to stand up at the bottom, THAT'S when I FELT it

Tried to hop on one foot out of the stairwell into the hall so someone would see me.

    Hopping = BAD IDEA

Sat in the stairwell for about 5 mins 'til I was found.

I just had a shift kit put in and the guys I talked to at the shop say they have M6's in there all the time with broken rear ends. Short gears in a stock rear end getting slammed with the manual, they see it all the time. Not that autos can't but they say its way more common on the manuals. They say what kills the autos is heat, for that reason I installed a separate tranny cooler.

The best deal and best shape I found was an auto. With the stall and shift kit, and 3.23 gear im happy. I need a little more gear but I'll wait for a deal on a better rear end first.

    I sold my 94 383 LT1 M6 with 4.10 gears to purchase a 00 Trans am with a A4. I installed a 3500 stall with 3.73 gears and I love it!!

My biggest issue with a M6 car is traction of the line and consistency at the track..... As far as holding your rpms up and downshifting to hear the car rumble the M6 is cool, but as far as being consistently fast the A4 works for me hands down.

I would never purchase another M6 after having a A4..

    just my .02!

A4 don't break rears as much as manuals, that is for sure. Can it happen, yes, just like anything else on this planet earth. I don't drive mine at the track more then 1 or 2 outtings a year, so I am not a hardcore 1/4 mile man.

We have always had the 6 speed car for my wife. But it didn't really matter to me. I never looked at any car as being better than the other because of transmission.
So when a buddy of mine spotted an 02 SS convertable forsale he called me. I stopped in and the price was right,,,an auto trans but I didn't care. Turned out to be 1 of 59 produced that year in Navy Blue Metallic.
So I bought it, didn't care about the auto. Miles were low and the car was super nice and lady owned/ordered with SLP goodies.

Now with a few bolt ons and a 3400 converter,,,,it's a real blast to drive,,,I actually enjoy it more than the 6 speed car. And this is coming from a former UMTR racer.
Granted we can jump in a 6speed anytime we like, there is still nothing wrong at all with an auto and I don't regret owning one.

Although now that these cars are used,,,and some very well used,,,it gets a little trickier finding a good 6speed car that hasn't been torn to shreds. Auto's tend to lead a cushier life.

Now we have the porn there is also the g/f to keep satisfied. It's easier for her, just puts her head in my lap....watch the hot coffee. Have you ever tried to reach across a seat at 60 mph and unhook that devil's invention...the bra strap while sipping on your double latte. If someone doesn't start paying attention, someone could get hurt. All this and somehow I believe that the Cops expect me to keep a 6 foot car in a 8 foot lane. Pfffft!! No can do Blue Boy. AUTOMATICS RULE!!
    FREAKING HILARIOUS!

Personally though, i've had a couple auto muscle cars, but i would never trade my 6 speed. There's just something to having more control over your engine while driving to me.
