    98 transmission into a 2001 engine. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

long story short my school has a 98 comaro and has a 2001 ls1 engine in it. we found out the 98 tranny wont fit into the 01 engine and we curious about the main differance between the two trannys. what mods will have to be done to be able to get this tranny to fit? we mounted the tranny with nothing in the bell housing and with the clutch, pressure plate and the flywheel off the engine and just stuck the mainshaft into the back of the crank and got it just as far as we did with the rest of the components in. there is about a 1/2 inch gap. someone please help. the tranny is a 6 speed manual. HELP!!!!!!!!

As far as I know it should fit. Something isn't lined up/installed properly.

What kind of car did it come out of?
If it was a vette you will have a gap because the pilot bearing for the torque tube appl.
are differant than the f body.
If this is the case ,change the pilot bearing to the ls1 and you may have to change oil pan and pick up
