    98-02 F Body Engine Differences?

I read somewhere there were different cams, intakes exhaust manifold designs through the 1998-2002 Camaro z28/SS models

From what i remember (please correct me if I'm wrong):

    1998:
    *First year LS1 Introduced

    1999:
    *Nothing

    2000:
    *Breather attached to intake Lid
*New Exhaust manifold design with better flow

    2001:
    *LS6 Intake Manifold
    *Less Aggressive Cam

    2002:
    *Nothing

This leads to my next question:

    I have a 2000 Z28 with SLP intake Lid and LM1 Catback..
*Would I gain about 15HP from an LS6 Intake?
    *Would I need a tune?
*Can I use my stock LS1 fuel rails, injectors, whatever else?
*Does the EGR hose hook up the same to the LS6 Manifold?
*I would need an LS6 Throttle Body also?
*Is this fairly easy to swap out, or would I need to pay a shop?

    Thanks

    Sadly now demodded :(

*sigh* Nobody checks the stickies anymore *sigh*

Pick the "Differences between the years" section...

LS6 intake has no provisions for an EGR...

    - I don't think you'll get 15 hp with just the intake. Rather it allows better upper RPM potential. They only gave 01/02 a 5hp increase.

    - A tune never hurts but IIRC isn't necessary for just the intake.

    - Yes.

    - See above post.

    - No.

    - Easy enough if you know what you're doing.

Actually I did read the sticky and it was great information, however I was a bit confused on the camshafts it talked about

when it says "smaller" is it the same cam that's in the 1998-99 or 01-02?

I can post the exact specs when I get home if you are really interested, but I'm sure you can find them online.

The differences are very small in the grinds of the cam.

Off the top of my head

    1998-2000 F-body cam
    198/209 .500/.500 119.5 LSA

    2001-2004 (all LS1)
    196/207 .469/.474 116 LSA

    28# injectors were used 1998 2001-2004
    26# injectors were used 1999-2000

The cam change was due more to the removal of the EGR system then anything else. As the new Passenger car intake (LS6) would not have any provisions for EGR.

Thanks! So, the sticky on the 2000 year is a typo saying "smaller cam"??

Anyway, so my 2000 LS1 theoretically would benefit more from a LS6 intake than the 01-02 did (because they had a slightly smaller cam)?

-If I was to replace my LS1 Intake with a LS6 one, how do I disconnect the EGR stuff?
-Why did GM do this, and still not have any issues with emissions?
-I've read other members getting maybe 10-15BHP, is this true?

And I am wanting to say yes because with a slightly bigger cam and adding the same intake would give you a little more power.

First, yes the earlier cars should benefit more from the LS6 intake, they have the better camshaft. You get the best of both.

Why they did it?? Don't know really. But evidently the EGR wasn't a big player and didn't make much difference in emissions. At the same time the smaller camshaft was used, but that doesn't explain how the Z06 corvettes got away with no EGR on the LS6 intakes considering they had an even larger cam than any of the F-bodies did, hmmm Sure makes ya wonder though.

I don't beleive the HP claim unless you are talking about a larger cam, compression, cylinder heads, type of build.
Putting the LS6 intake on a relatively stock car yields very little. I did it and didn't find much of anything.

Running the LS6 cam in my wifes 2000 SS with the LS1 intake, tuned and alot of track time. Installed the LS6 intake later, found I needed to change the WOT AFR just a tad to get it where it was before. (added a pinch)
But at the track I saw really no difference.

thanks for the information.. where did you find that?

So, in short my gains from installing an LS6 intake on my car would be 10hp at best (given i have only modded w/ slp lid and slp LM1 catback..)??

    Dude that's the Lobe lift

Anyway I can shed some lite on the non EGR equipped LS1's
All `97-`00 Corvettes and all `01-up LS's use a cam with a 116/117 or tighter LSA
The tighter LSA bleeds more exhaust gas into the intake charge during the overlap period and negates the use of an EGR valve for proper emissions.
The `98-00 F-body cam has a 119.5 LSA and is specific for those cars.
The Corvettes of the same Vintage use specific cams aswell (with a tighter LSA).

.292 lobe lift x 1.7 rocker ratio = .496 lift at the valve...
