Red- 2000 SS '89 IROC-Z
2009 Mustang GT vs. 2000 Camaro SS
Out of sheer curiosity I was checking out the GT's specs, and I was slightly displeased with what I saw.
GT- 4.6L V8
SS- 5.7L V8
GT- 3,356 lb.s
SS- 3,439 lb.s
GT- 300 bhp
SS- 320 bhp
GT- 0-60 in 5.2 seconds
SS- 0-60 in 5.3 seconds
I'm not sure how reliable these sites are that I'm getting this information from, but I'm just curious as to why the GT is faster by a tenth of a second. Do those 83 lb.s make that much of a difference?

I know that the LS1 hp rating is off. It was proposed low because they thought that people wouldn't buy them because they were too powerful. There's a dyno chart floating around somewhere of a stock LS1 that produced more like 350 hp. So I don't doubt that the 0-60 is off. I'm stock automatic, so 5.3 is probably about right for me.

They underrated them because they didnt want to mess with their corvette sales which also had the same LS1 engine. Not because too powerful.

BLACK- 2000 Camaro SS
I'm even more surprised that the GT is lighter than the SS.

I just do not believe the mustang weighs that little.
One thing our cars have on the newer muscle cars from the
other Detroit Auto makers is that we are about 1000 pounds lighter.
That, as you all know, makes a big difference in performance.
All the best.

Arctic White- 2000 Z-28
My buddies S197 GT has every bolt on except LTs vs my full exhaust, cutout ls6, ptb, ftra, slp lid stock stall/tune Z losses by a car or so...if I had a converter and tune it would be lights out, even more so if I was a M6

In my experience the 3Vs always need 2-3 more mods to beat or hang with an LS1

I am excited to see these and the new SS's out on the road this summer. Should be kinda neat to see some new performance cars out there.

A friend of mine has an 08 Mustang GT. His car is the auto 5spd. The car has 285 width 19 in tires, much wider than stock. He has a CAI, a Superchips tuner, a catback and has changed to 3.73 gears.
My car is an 02 Z28. I have a lid, FRAM, Magnaflow cat-back, Diablosport Predator, Nitto 555R's that are stock 245 width. My car is an A4 with 2.73 gears.
My best is 12.796 at 108.40. His best is 13.4 at 104. Running together I beat him by at least 3 tenths everytime and a couple of times beat him by 5 tenths.
His car weighs almost 200 lbs more than mine. We weigh the cars at the strip everytime we run.
Through the 1/8 we are real close, within 2 tenths and 1 mph. It's the top end ability of the LS1 that allows the Z28 to literaly walk away from the Mustang.
Mod for mod our cars are about as identical as you can get. I'm getting 3.42 gears next and I'm looking for mid 12's. This seems to be the way it goes with these two cars. When they were both stock they were about a half second apart. As we match mods they stay about a half second apart, gears will give me a much larger advantage because the 2.73 is such a poor place to start and he had a decent stock ratio (3.55 I think).Last edited by fergyflyer; 03-03-2009 at 03:36 PM.
