1967 Chevy Caprice - CHP Rides
'67 CAPRICE
Paul Langone
Chicago, IL

When Paul first purchased this Caprice from its original owner in 2003, it had a lazy 283ci small-block with a Powerglide transmission. Paul was quick to add a ZZ4 350 crate motor with L98 aluminum heads and a factory HEI ignition. With a 700-R4 and 3.31:1 gears in the rear, he ran a respectable 14.46 at 94.50 mph. Rounding out the car--besides overall classic appeal--are upgraded suspension and brakes. And get this: So far, Paul has already endured three Power Tours with no repercussions. Paul can't wait for his Vintage Air, and a supercharger is in play for the near future.
RETRO Z06
'57 CORVETTE
Bob Kahl
Palmdale, CA
It's not often that we feature vehicles in the Tri-Five era, but this one was just too unique to pass up. The pristine body is stock, but this Vette sports an all-new Z06 powerplant and a six-speed transmission. A 9-inch four-link rearend houses the 4.10:1 gears, and power disc brakes bring the '57 to a halt--it's even got A/C!
FIREHOUSE CHEVELLE
'70 CHEVELLE SS
Darrell Trumpower
Culpeper, VA
Darrell's '70 Chevelle SS isn't powered by its original 454. Instead, a pump-gas Shafiroff 540 big-block gives the Chevelle its go power with the help of twin 600-cfm Edelbrock carburetors, manifold, and RPM cylinder heads. An MSD ignition provides the spark, while the ATI trans commits power through its 4,200-stall converter to the 4.30:1 gears with an Eaton posi unit. Currently, the Chevelle sits on Performance Suspension upper and lower control arms. Plans include a ladder-bar setup with coilover suspension.
LUCKY LUKE
'72 CHEVELLE
Luke Volkmann
Denver, CO
After Luke landed his Chevelle in a ditch at 55 mph from a botched wheel replacement (by a friend), he wanted to turn his luck around and start fresh. All the bodywork was redone and sprayed with a thick coat of PPG Gunmetal Gray. To get the big-body Chevelle moving, he dropped in a 406 small-block, which pulls fuel from a Holley 750-cfm double-pumper on top of a Street Dominator intake and Dart cylinder heads. Hooker headers and Flowmaster piping help expel the fumes, while the Turbo 350 transmission and 3.55:1 gears make cruises a cinch.
Z06 EATER
'69 CORVAIR
Mike Meyers,br> Wood River, IL
This unique Corvair lost its original six-banger and was replaced with the heart of a '98 LS1 with a 4L60E transmission. Mike has owned the car since he was 14 years old and has logged well over 7,000 miles on it since its completion. 4.10:1 gears and a 12-bolt rearend propel Mike to an amazing 11.82 at 114.5 mph in the quarter-mile, but still manages to get 16 mpg on the highway.
