The 04's performed the same as our TA's/Camaros. I'd wait for a 05-06 model myself , 6.0L with 400 HP and much better body looks

    Get one with the 6.0

    Don't bother with the '04.

I find that hard to believe factoring in the extra weight and loss through the IRS. The 05-06's are more on par with a ls1 f-bod IMO.

I would go after an 05-06 for the reasons mentioned above. They look better and have a higher performing motor stock.

To me, a GTO is a GTO despite the year. I love my 04. I have no complaints. A tune on an 04 could put it on 05/06 territory. Especially with an underdrive pulley.

Forgot headers. But I think GMHTP has done stories about tuning GTOs with CAIs, catbacks, underdrive pulleys and headers to get LS2 numbers.

Remember, A4 GTO's have a 3.46 rear gear and if you get a 6-speed GTO you get the better gearing of the C5 Z06 tranny. There are plenty of low stock 13 seconds LS1 GTOs out there.

There is no more loss with the IRS. You have a tranny, drive shaft, ring & pinion, then axles. Just because its IRS doesnt mean its going to eat up any more than 1-2% ove ra solid axle. Also, remember that the 1998-2000 didnt get the better intake or even the 241 heads that the 04 GTO has. The 853s are close but not quite as good just like the LS1 intake isnt as good as the LS6. Pretty much the LS2 uses a NON-EGR LS1 intake....its not as good as the LS6.

The 05/06 does get the Corvette brakes though, even though the rotors dont swap due to the different bolt pattern.

The 04 has the shittiest tune of all and the torque management is so bad it makes F-body owners happy with their torque management performance. lol

Also, there is maybe 30 rwhp diference between the LS1 & LS2.

Could've sworn 04s were 350 horse. Not saying a pulley and tune won't pick up a good bit just not what Rich's post was indicating

They are like F-bodies.....they range from 290-320 rwhp depending on conditions and how strong the engine is and what conditions there are when its on the dyno. Comparing one dyno from 1998 vs one from 2004 is retarded but some people try to do it. The 04s are 350 crank hp but most 05/06s (400 crank) are between 330-340 rwhp so they are more but not THAT much more.

A tune gets the Torque Managerment out which helps a ton and then the tune gets 20 hp easily so headers are not needed to get "close" to LS2 numbers. You still lack 350 rpms on the top. 6250 vs 6600

In a roll-race (which most are but not my favorite) a GTO is tough to contend with because of the rear gears when you are sporting an A4 vs A4. Those 3.46s work well in those cars.

Head soak hurts the LS1 A4 cars more than any other LS1 cars out there......the tunes are SHIT on the GTO's from the factory and worse than the Corvette and F-bodies.
