Thought it was time for a rebuild !
Drove the Z/28 to Indy from San Diego last year no issues. Still had a radiatior full of plain water and the 15 degree weather the radiator musta cracked - frozen, well after the new radiator (and my 3rd ps pump at the same time) I started it up and the temp slowly climed to 210 then 240, started to drive it around thinking more flow... well it got to 250, 260 so I pulled over and shut it down. I figured that dexcool slime finally did me in letting it sit around for a while. When I had it running my heater core was already glogged (no heat). I flushed the core while doing the radiator and a dexcool fur ball came out. Well still no heat. So I let it cool drove it home not before my after market guage hit 280 ! I thinking great I'm gunna burn this thing up down the street from my house. Let it cool opened up the radiatior I was 2 qt low, filled it drove it again, temp climed to 230 thenamazingly my brand new thermostat decided to open ! woot and I got heat ! drove it on the highway,it stays at 185 ! damn these motors take some abuse ! Currently at 131,000 miles.
And I was thinkin forged bottom end, H/C and juice. Well maybe in a few years.04 C5 A4 Torch Red - sold

When I did the opti and waterpump on my LT1 (for no damn reason ) I had a high, rich idle condition that was stumping the hell out of me. One day in an attempt to bleed the supposedly tough-to-bleed LT1 cooling system, I had the car running for a while. It got up to about 260 before I shut it down and put a fan on it. I swear I could smell the heads warping Thankfully like you say, these friggin' things are tough.
